Description
Isles, as we all know, are in the mushy middle - they're in the thick of the wild-card hunt, but on the outside of it right now; at the same time, they've already banked too many points to get anywhere near the lottery and an impact prospect. Too good to be sellers, too mediocre to make any more big splashes as buyers.

So this ACGM presupposes they do a little of both - trade from positions of strength (backup goalie, RD3) to replenish the pipeline a little bit, while zeroing in on one of their most glaring weaknesses this season (another puck-moving defenseman.)

I still have concerns over the 2nd & 3rd pair D - Aho's put up solid numbers as LD3 but might be in over his head a little at LD2, so Noah will have to step it up a little; and while both Ghost & Romanov have played their off-hands, I don't think there's enough of a sample size for either to really tell if they're any good at it. I think you shelter the hell out of that 3rd pair and hope that the strides Sebastian Aho the Lesser has made this year are legit.

Trades
1.
NYI
  1. Brossoit, Laurent
  2. Ellis, Noah [Reserve List]
  3. 2024 2nd round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
NEED: Logan Thompson is hurt, and Adin Hill isn't the answer. Neither of them have any playoff experience, either. Varlamov has tons of both & has been right there with both these guys in terms of numbers (.917 SV%, 2.64 GAA.)
VGK
  1. Varlamov, Semyon ($2,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Vegas sends a 2nd rounder & Brossoit's unwanted deal back, and throws in an interesting lottery-ticket prospect to make up for the pick being next year instead of this year.
2.
NYI
  1. Greenway, Jordan
  2. Lorenz, Rieger [Reserve List]
  3. 2023 2nd round pick (MIN)
Additional Details:
NEED: Mayfield allows Minnesota to move Matt Dumba's deal, seeing as he seems to be on the outs there. Mayfield slides right into a top-4 role on the Wild and can audition for a potential extension in the playoffs.
MIN
  1. Mayfield, Scott
Additional Details:
I've long said Mayfield gets the Josh Manson package - a 2nd and a prospect. Lorenz is a little further away but has some intriguing upside. I like Greenway better than most of what's in the bottom-6 on the Isles currently, so if the Wild want to move that cap hit, too, I'll take it off their hands.
3.
NYI
  1. Gostisbehere, Shayne ($2,250,000 retained)
Additional Details:
NEED: Isles need another puck-moving LHD if they want to make a push. Ghost has his flaws, and seeing that he's the polar opposite of Ben Chiarot, there's a chance he could be more of a bargain at this year's deadline than the more ~gritty players.
ARI
  1. Salo, Robin
  2. Wilde, Bode
  3. 2023 2nd round pick (NYI)
  4. 2024 4th round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
Ask on Ghost with retention has been rumored around a pair of 2nds - Isles would give up the better of their 2023 2nds, and offer Robin Salo & a 4th as something to potentially replace Ghost on Arizona's NHL team. Wilde has no value but is already playing for Arizona's ECHL team, so why not make it official.

Makes no sense to acquire Greenway and then put him on the fourth line. I don’t dislike the player, but why wouldn’t you give him him top line minutes and see if he can do anything with them?

Meant to flip him and Fasching and forgot - I don't think Greenway has top-6 offensive potential, but that Foligno - Eriksen Ek - Greenway line was a strong shutdown line for the Wild the past few seasons, so I think pairing him with JGP would be a good start to really building a reasonable facsimile - Parise might not be the ideal Foligno replacement but he's all they've got to work with there.

I don’t disagree. But I’d like to see Holmstrom get another look with the top line, and if you aren’t doing that than I’d like to see another young player get a chance. Bailey might be one of the ten worst players I’ve seen this year. He’s looking at finished in the rear view mirror.

I wouldn’t say the isles are too good to be sellers - at their current rate they’ll finish between 8th-12th overall which gives them a good chance to draft an elite prospect

perhaps we should amend that statement to "too good *in the eyes of their current GM* to be full-blown sellers"

Somehow, Barzal & Horvat have been doing very well with Bailey doing his best Leo Komarov on the top line - they're getting 55% of the chances together, nearly 57% of the shots when they're together, and in just under 56 minutes together, they have 2 GF vs. 1 GA (so literally, prime Leo Komarov numbers). For whatever reason, it's working, so I'll ride with it til it's not. But once it starts falling apart, sure - waive Koivula again, put Bailey in the press box, and let Holmstrom get that top-6 time.
