Description
Despite the Islanders just making a very win-now move, the most likely reality is that they won't make the playoffs this season, (Especially after the Barzal injury) and if that does prove to be the case, the Isles cannot afford another no-show like last year's trade deadline. The Islanders need to be savvy not to trade players too integral to the roster this or next year, but also should look to acquire future assets. Varlomov has long been on his way out the door of Long Island and is cleary not an important part of this team. On the other hand, Mayfield does play a strong role, but he will hopefully be replacable either in free agency or within the organization. Even after moving these players, the Islanders could still get hot and make the playoffs, but more likely than not they will slot in the bottom twelve and pick in the mid-lottery of a stacked draft class. And have Bo Horvat. Not bad.
For the Kings, this is a move they could make if the Chychrun situation looks grim, and they can still go after him or another D-Man this summer with a cupboard full of prospects and first round picks. They could really use a goaltender who has proven himself in the playoffs, even though Copley has been sensational, I don't feel like the Kings would be happy to start him game one of the playoffs, an experienced upgrade is needed. Mayfield fills a need on the left side and is also a good, underrated player.
For the trade itslef the Kings trade three real assets, one bad contract and a throw in in Lemieux who I just think would fit the Isles ‘identity’ well. Peterson has not been good since he signed the big money deal and he’s now 28, definitely not the goalie of the future the Kings signed him to be. Moving off his deal and whole situation makes sense for cap reasons as well as LA could have more than 11 million in cap space this summer to sign two goalies but also go big-fish hunting with. The Islanders can take on a reclamation project in net just as they did with Lehner and Varly in the first place. Bjornfot is tough to sell on but he seems like a clear change of scenery candidate as he has struggled to crack the Los Angeles lineup but still has a first round pick tag. He could very well be part of the future for the Islanders.
Thanks for reading and feel free to tell me why I’m so stupid in the comments

Islanders need a righty d prospect, and they can’t afford to take back Petersen. Also the cost to dump Petersen is probably a first round pick so for that reason alone the islanders would decline. I’m not even going to get into the value of Mayfield and Varly compared to what you offered, and tbh idk why LAK would want Mayfield lol.

It has already been reported by LeBrun that the Kings are not interested in a rental goaltender. Also, RHD is the absolute last thing the Kings need.

So the Kings are giving up a ton here (including one of their only LHD) for nothing that interests them.

LA says no.

Hard to see the real gain here for the Islanders. Mayfield is a RHD who can they easily re-sign or replace. Bjornfot is a LHD who has 'struggled to crack the LA line up' but is now being used out of position on the right. Valamov's cap space will be invaluable, especially with Horvat's and Barzal's extensions kicking in next year, so replacing it with another duff goalie in Petersen is a poor idea. In a worst case scenario they re-sign Schneider and bring him up as a cheap veteran back-up, and there are likely other candidates in the off season, or they even re-sign Varly to a cheap deal. Lemieux is, as you say, a throw in, and guys who could fill that 4th line role are easily acquired in free agency, and probably acquired cheaper. So for taking on cap (that they will definitely need next year) they get a 2nd and a 3rd.

LA however benefits in escaping Petersen's cap hit and adds Mayfield who they can re-sign to give them good RHD depth. I wouldn't call it stupid but it certainly seems to be more beneficial to the Kings than the Isles.

It's possible the Isles miss the playoffs but they're still in contention at present albeit likely only in the battle for a wild card spot. They added Horvat with that in mind so can't see them keen to quit on the idea.

Almost everything you say here about the Kings is factually inaccurate.

First, Bjornfot is not playing on the right side. You might be thinking of Durzi, who is a RHD, being used on the left. Bjornfot is currently the 7th defenseman, and he takes turns with Alex Edler at 3LD. He's only 21 years old, and has a bright future ahead of him with the Kings. They have no interest in trading him.

RHD is the Kings single strongest position. Mayfield would be, at best, 6th on the LA Kings RHD depth chart behind Doughy, Roy, Durzi, Clarke, and Spence. The Kings also have Sean Walker and Helge Grans that are RHD that would probably fall in behind Mayfield.

Petersen looks really good in Ontario right now. The Reign have the single best combined save percentage in the AHL between Villalta and Petersen. They have no reason to dump Petersen's contract. He'll be back in the NHL next season.

There is no reason at all for the Kings to do any of this.

No, look at the roster above. Bjornfot is on the right. Hence bad fit. A guy who according to the OP is struggling to crack the LA roster on his natural side is now being used on the off-side. saying a 5 mil goalie is looking great in the AHL? Hmmm....Schneider is looking pretty good in the AHL too!

You may be right on the other points. There is, however, absolutely no reason for the Isles to do it either and it definitely favours the Kings.
