Description
Figured it would be fun to try and take a swing at this year's deadline Costco - the Blackhawks have probably the most assets to send out, and with a few big trades in our rearview mirror, I wanted to try and think of some interesting places to move some of these guys.

If you think these values are bad, remember: I have no idea what I'm talking about!!

THREE WAY TRADE BREAKDOWN

Chicago sends: Jake McCabe (FLA)
Chicago receives: Eetu Luostarinen (FLA), Jesse Puljujarvi (EDM), 2024 2nd (EDM), 2025 4th (FLA)

EDM sends: Puljujarvi (CHI), 2024 2nd (CHI)
EDM receives: Gudas (FLA)

FLA sends: Luostarinen (CHI), Gudas (EDM), 2025 4th (CHI)
FLA receives: Jake McCabe

Looking at that, I think another mid-round pick should go from Chicago to Florida but I thought up the 3-team idea too late to go back and redo the trades without goofing everything up.

At the end of this, you've clearly made the team worse, which would be the goal this year - but there are a few interesting vets worth auditioning, and now you've got 18(!!!) top-100 picks in the next 2 drafts. Plenty of room to make the moves you're going to need to really turn this ship around.
Trades
1.
CHI
  1. Johnsson, Andreas
  2. Okhotiuk, Nikita
  3. 2023 2nd round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
VALUE: I think a 2nd and a good prospect is a great value for a guy you signed to a one year deal in the offseason - Okhotiuk looks like he'll be a strong LD3/PK1 type when he's fully developed, the type of defensively minded player a young team needs. Taking back Johansson means Jersey can take Domi at his full cost without retaining, which I would do as Chicago - we've got more contracts to retain than retention slots.
NJD
  1. Domi, Max
Additional Details:
NEED: Tom Fitzgerald spits the bit on the Timo Meier price - he's not giving up Dawson Mercer, and that's that! Jersey pivots to a rental piece that doesn't break the bank while still giving them a middle-6 upgrade. Domi replaces Zetterlund at RW3, Zetterlund goes to the 4th line replacing Miles Wood, and Miles Wood replaces that guy who keeps sneaking past the ushers in the Devils' press box.
2.
CHI
  1. Kuntar, Trevor [Reserve List]
  2. Smith, Craig
  3. 2024 3rd round pick (BOS)
Additional Details:
VALUE: Lafferty is probably worth a 3rd/4th on his own; the combination of eating the rest of Craig Smith's AAV and kicking the pick out a year is enough for me to get them to included an intriguing NCAA prospect they drafted in the 3rd a couple years back.
BOS
  1. Lafferty, Sam
Additional Details:
NEED: Lafferty makes sense for Boston - he's a bottom-6 player with cost certainty for next year (only a $1.15M AAV), something they're going to need. I think he's an upgrade over AJ Greer this year, as well. Clearing Craig Smith in this deal gives Boston an extra $2M in deadline cap to play with, too.
3.
CHI
  1. Kravtsov, Vitali
  2. 2023 1st round pick (DAL)
  3. 2024 3rd round pick (NYR)
  4. 2025 4th round pick (NYR)
Additional Details:
VALUE: Playing Owen Tippett's part as "Post-Hype 1st Round Pick Needing a Change of Scenery" is Kravstov, who gets his wish and is traded away from the Rangers. The picks are negotiable if I'm Chicago - if you really want to have it be a pair of 2nds instead of 1st/3rd, I'll consider it but I want might another B-tier prospect for my troubles then.
NYR
  1. Kane, Patrick ($5,250,000 retained)
  2. Zech, Cooper
  3. 2024 5th round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
NEED: Kane's been linked to two teams, and decides to go to the one that's won a Cup in his lifetime. He brings 3 rings and a suddenly resurgent game to a Rangers team that has a young enough core to sacrifice this draft capital. With his NMC, I tried to emulate the Claude Giroux trade - Philly had some lesser assets included on their end, so Cooper Zech goes as organizational depth and the Rangers recoup a little of their expended draft capital.
4.
CHI
Buffalo retains 25% of Kane's AAV to get him down to $2.625M. The Sabres have the cap space and aren't going to be selling, so they get a little treat for offering up one of their three retention slots to help facilitate this deal.
    BUF
    1. 2025 4th round pick (NYR)
    5.
    CHI
    1. Gudas, Radko
    2. Luostarinen, Eetu
    3. 2025 4th round pick (FLA)
    Additional Details:
VALUE: Not really valuing Gudas a ton here, as he's a 3rd pair guy getting paid a little too much. The ask on McCabe has been a 2nd; I'd say a 24 year old 3C who's shown he might have a little left to unlock plus a mid-round pick would be fair value (s/t to @datools for the inspiration here.)
    FLA
    1. McCabe, Jake
    Additional Details:
NEED: Florida's been playing Marc Staal at LD2 and has Gudas at RD3. They can slide Staal to LD3, Josh Mahura fills in at RD3, and McCabe slides in on the 2nd pair to give them a playoff-worthy top 4. Sending out Gudas & Luostarinen makes this 100% cap-neutral so they can still activate Anthony Duclair.
    6.
    CHI
    1. Puljujärvi, Jesse
    2. 2024 2nd round pick (EDM)
    Additional Details:
VALUE: Pool Party is a combination cap offset/reclamation project. Chicago can give him some good ice time in the home stretch to see if it's worth keeping him around; the real prize for them would be the pick. I envisioned this trade and the one before as a 3-way-deal, check the description up to for how I sort out the values.
    EDM
    1. Gudas, Radko
    Additional Details:
NEED: Edmonton has been searching for a solid bottom-pair D who's physical and defensively sound. They get Radko Gudas; it's up to you to decide if you think that fills the need.
    7.
    CHI
    1. Gurianov, Denis
    2. Stranges, Antonio
    3. 2023 4th round pick (DAL)
    Additional Details:
AA isn't worth a ton, even with retention - I like the idea of taking a low floor/high ceiling lottery ticket like Stranges even if it means a lesser pick return.
    DAL
    1. Athanasiou, Andreas ($1,500,000 retained)
    Additional Details:
NEED: Dallas wants something more out of their 3rd line than Guriano's 2-7-9; AA isn't a ton better at 12-8-20 but still has the speed to be a threat with better linemates. It also clears up a little extra deadline cap space for Dallas to make another move.
    8.
    CHI
    1. 2023 5th round pick (COL)
    Additional Details:
VALUE: Whatever! Get him outta here!!!!
    COL
    1. Johnson, Jack ($475,000 retained)
    Additional Details:
NEED: Hey, it worked out fine last year, right?

why would the Sabres help a team they need to play 3 times while in a wild card race for literally nothing in return

Because *someone* is going to get paid to retain that pick, so why not be the ones to get paid? It's not like if the Sabres say no, the deal doesn't happen - Chicago would just pivot to asking one of the half-dozen other teams who have the cap space and retention slots available to take the pick instead.

That's not true not many teams are willing to do this to start. If this was so simple and teams were willing to do it for a 4th we would see this happen in the league way more frequently. We're not ahead of the curve, NHL GMs know this option exists, so if they're not doing it it's clearly not simple as. There's no reason for Buffalo to do this, they get nothing, they help a team they need to beat, it makes no sense

I know that the actual money is only a few hundred thousand (at this late point in the season), but we all know 4th rounders are a long shot at best, and that's just to play nhl games. I can see Terry signing off on a big splash- like trading for and extending meier- before scratching a check for a few hundred k for a 4th round pick.
