You really think that's a winning offer for Nick Schmaltz? Detroit has strong interest in him. And would easily outbid that.

Canes do give up cap flexibility and will lose players off their core by bringing in Mitch.

If it's a sign and trade with a extension in which Marner takes a bit of pay cut then you might be able to make the books work

Why would Marner take a pay cut? You’re losing other valuable players elsewhere when you bring in a 10m+ player…no way around it.

Lot of what ifs for a player who wouldn’t come to Carolina or stay here anyway. Mitch boy and the Toronto media are too much of a reality show for the rest of us to break up.

I'm thinking somewhere in the $9m a year range... He would take a pay cut because that would help the Hurricanes surround the team with even more talent and help him win a cup
