Description
Using Frank Seravelli's latest contract AAV projections to build the best version of the Avs for next year given Lando's absence, cap crunch, and some key RFA deals.

If they are in contention then we go for it; if not then Devon Toews is likely a TDL move to ease the cap crunch next season with Landeskog's return (if he remains on track to do so). There is no accruing cap space so they need to spend up to the ceiling in the off-season. There could be some good buyout candidates between now and then but for now Monahan seems like the best 2C for the money we have; especially if surrounded by strong wingers.

The only stretch here is the Barbashev contract, which seems like too good of a steal according to Seravelli. I think he gets closer to $6 mil AAV due to the weak class; definitely more than Compher does; but using the reference he is a no brainer for a team like the Avs needing to replace Landeskog's presence on the ice and solidify their top 6 with at least 2 additions.

IMO there's little chance Byram takes multiple years for less than $6M AAV with arb rights next summer. A 4x4 would be a massive discount for COL.

I wish they would sign him soon so we can know; but it is such a huge contract with lots of different ways it will go. I much prefer a bridge deal; not just because of our cap situation but because we need to see him stay healthy before committing to a huge contract. Anything above $4 million prices us out for any top 6 forwards on the UFA market.

Byram has indicated he wants 1st Pair minutes & money. Unfortunately, he has zero negotiating power this summer, but the Avs have also earned brownie points for being extremely accomodating towards him. This second point means a high likelihood he trusts the team enough to agree to a one year deal to bet on himself and not view it as an insult. Given the Avs recent history, I fully expect them to hold out as long as possible for a $4M x2. But since they really can't afford Byram holding out, I think its a late, one year contract like Gabe & Mikko. Comparable Dmen based on Age, GP, Pts, & Position seem to point towards $3M AAV.

That bottom 6 still looks weak to me. I'm thinking Cogs may well come back for one last shot and possibly EJ too.
