If I'm paying a player 4.1m for 5 years I would want more than "serviceable" Dman. Not saying the value isn't fair, but wanted the Leafs by much better off keeping Bozak and then having to spend 4m on someone else for the next four years. Sheahan as 3rd liner centre? No thanks. IF you have cap room, might be best to keep Komarov, there are enough roster spots.

I don't know the whole story with Maata BUT if he's got the potential and his shot surpressing is good that he could be a top 3/4 defenseman I would be interested.

absolutely no interest in a 3rd line centerman who had half has many goals as Matt Martin did

I see Maatta as a solid 3/4 that can play up and down your lineup. Similar to Zaitsev for me, and Zaitsev makes 4.5 so I can live with the money and term. Hunter is also familiar with Maatta from his time in London so if the Leafs are dealing for him it is because they are plenty confident in his skillset and upside.

Sheahan gets a lot of bad rep for his past season, and partly rightfully so, but the two years prior he scored 13 and 14 goals. He also provides other intangibles like his PK ability. He has familiarity with Babcock, so he knows what he's getting. I know Sheahan at 3C isn't ideal but it sets up years 2 and 3 perfectly with him sliding down into a 4C role as Nylander takes over 2C.

There also are no roster spots for Komarov, which I why I had to deal him. Kapanen needs playing time and Hyman/Martin won't be sent to the press box by Babcock.

Read my other quote to understand my mindset with Sheahan. I'm banking on last year being a bit of an outlier too.
