Description

some explanation:

whether its what the caps should do or not is not the question -- Wilson is off the table
any deal would have to be cap in/cap out for Washington and Toronto needs an immediate top 6 contributor coming back, so Kuzy goes to TOR, one of him/Tavares/Domi goes to wing
Murray gets packaged in to help TOR with their cap for this year and next by avoiding having to buy him out themselves, it also slightly lessens the future cost for washington
an unprotected 24 1st + Protas + Lapierre is a good future package, comparable if not better to the 23 1st + Muhk + Zetterlund future package that NJD gave up for Meier
from my (admittedly not too knowledgable) poking around with a Leafs version, this deal would leave them with ~3.35 to sign Samsonov

Wilson wouldn’t be enough for Willy and neither is this pile.

2 important things here:

1. I’d think almost no chance that Kuznetsov is part of a Nylander deal. Doesn’t fit anything that Treliving likes in his players and he isn’t worth his contract. Adding his extra cap from Nylander isn’t an option for Toronto.

2. Washington can’t buy out Murray. Their buyout window is well gone by already.

I wish Kuzy would move to the wing in DC. But alas, I think he is too prideful to do that willingly. A line of Kuzy-Backstrom-Wilson/Oshie could be a lot of fun to watch. Or even Ovi-Backstrom-Kuzy. IDK, if he was willing to scoot over, I think it already would have happened.

I wouldn’t be very happy giving up Lapierre and Protas and a first for one year of Nylander. Then on top of that, moving Kuzy and taking back Murray is just too much (and we can’t buy him out because the window is passed).

There’s a good chance a deal just won’t work out between the two teams as much as I’d love to add Nylander without moving Wilson.
