Why on earth would Washington ever do this. The Capitals wouldn’t trade any of those pieces for Casey Desmith. Are you serious?

It has to do with cap issues. And you get a better goalie.

Lindgren was pretty solid most of last season, Caps are happy with him as the backup. Caps won't trade Mantha along with a pick if it doesn't return a player that makes the team better.

So the solution to being over the Cap by ~$800,000 is to trade three decent assets for a 31 year old goalie I’m not convinced is a better option than Shepard himself?

Yeah, WSH will obviously not be doing that.
