Description
I'm not a Senators fan, but their situation caught my eye. Ottawa is right up against the cap ceiling after signing Tarasenko, and still have to sign Pinto. I used McLeod's bridge deal with Edmonton as a comparable for Pinto's next contract, as both are young depth centers for their current clubs with plenty room to grow. Pinto was more productive last season but McLeod had more leverage via arbitration rights, so I think their contracts will be in the same ballpark.

Barring Forsberg or anyone else from the main roster opening the season on LTIR, the Sens will have to shed some money before the season starts. Joseph or Kubalik are the most likely candidates in my mind, with whomever proves to be the better fit in training camp sticking around while the other is shipped out. Below is one trade scenario I could envision for Ottawa to become cap compliant, and one that wouldn't necessitate the Sens giving up any more high draft picks while still being palatable for the other team.

As always, let me know your thoughts; helpful feedback is always appreciated!

OTT
  1. Ellis, Ryan
Additional Details:
Ellis's NHL career is by all accounts over due to injury, so his contract will be placed on LTIR to make Ottawa cap compliant. Operating in LTIR isn't ideal but the Sens were likely going to be right up against the cap in any case, and this way they duck the cap line without having to give up any high draft picks.
PHI
  1. Joseph, Mathieu
Additional Details:
Since the Flyers are well under the cap, Ellis would have been on IR for them instead of LTIR. This way, Philadelphia gets real money and cap savings, so they have the flexibility to take on contracts in exchange for assets to help further their rebuild. They also get Joseph, who is still in the prime of his career and a decent if somewhat overpaid depth forward. He would be able to eat minutes for the Flyers while their prospects develop and potentially serve as a trade chip down the line.

The overwhelming majority of Ellis’ contract is covered by insurance so the flyers aren’t paying him basically anything and we don’t need to move his contract because we aren’t looking to compete. And we are going to take on another team’s terrible contract unless we are incentivized to do so. Joseph is still owed $9M+ over 3 years I wouldn’t touch him without at minimum a 2nd and a prospect coming back our away.

$9 million over 3 years sounds like a terrible contract but when you realize that Joseph is at worst a $2 million player and probably a $2.5 million player, its not that bad at all. The Sens would love to keep him if they could stay under the cap.

As GMDannyB suggested above, Ellis's LTIR isn't that significant in any deal.
Ottawa might just be pleased to get rid of a contract....Joseph in this case.....for free. Can they find a team, well that might be difficult. Gee, Thomas Tatar is out there and could be signed for under 2m.

He’s a 3rd liner at absolute best realistically less than that. No thanks. Find another team to dump him on

He was on track for 26 points in a down year, and is very good at carrying the puck up the ice and penalty killing.
