Paying to dump Garland doesn’t make sense. Don’t love giving Toews that much over 7 years but I would like to sign him. Don’t like giving Tanev that much over 3 years with his age/injury history as well

I don't like paying to dump a good middle six guy either, thing is he's over paid. Garland has been available for months with no takers. Lot's of Canucks fans said he or one of the other wingers would be traded over the summer when teams had cap space, they weren't. If the team wants to move a winger it's unfortunately going to cost, and if the goal is to make the playoffs and you can improve your roster by moving the player for a pick that is highly likely to never be a impact player (let alone an NHL player) then I think it makes sense.

I would also prefer not to give Toews 7 years, that said I believe he's going to be offered 7 from someone so if the team wants him they probably have to go 7 as well.

Tanev im fine with. The guys a top pairing RD and has a history with the team and Hughes, at 3 years at a very reasonable cap hit for a top pair RD I'm willing to take the injury risk and likely 60 games a season he plays. Another plus of signing Tanev would also be him essentially serving as a stop gap for Willander. Although three years isn't likely enough time for Willander to develop into a top pair RD it will give the team more time to better assess his potential, and in in the meantime it gives Hughes a partner for the remainder of his current contract.

I don’t even think he’s overpaid. He plays at a 5M level and that’s how much he makes. If we move a winger I’d rather move Boeser, and I feel like we’d have a solid chance to get a better return (or in this case any return) if we move Boeser instead of Garland

I don’t completely hate the Toews contract, it’s just 7x8 when he’s gonna be turning 30 is risky. But if it’s what needs to be done then I’d probably be willing to do it

Tanev I’d be fine singing to a 1 or 2 year deal. If we’re going 3+ years I’d want a lower cap hit

I don't think either of those UFA contracts are quite that expensive (depends entirely on where the cap is next year) but it's nice to see that we have the space to make meaningful improvements to the team.

With the cap increase coming next season and Toews having finished 11th, 8th and 14th in Norris voting over the last three years I think 8M might be a bit low. Selling him on coming home and giving max term may lower the price a bit?..
I think Tanev falls somewhere in the 5-6.5 range. When healthy he's a top pair RD, which aren't cheap. Based on his age, injury history and that he liked Vancouver you might be able to get him slightly cheaper.

It would be great if they could get them cheaper though!
