Description
I don’t see JGP as a cap dump. He is a very capable 3C who can PP/PK and play a 200ft game and win key faceoffs. The Islanders have some of the best center depth in the league, which could make Pageau expendable if the right moves line up.

IMO the most likely thing the Islanders try is a “DeBrincat” like package (JGP+Wahlstrom+1st) for a player who would be a bigger upgrade. However, I do think you can try to get creative with Pageau get 2 ‘lesser’ but still impactful guys for the cap space he takes up

I tested this trade in the trade machine and it was approved. Isles have the space to make it work
Trades
NYI
  1. Schmaltz, Nick
Additional Details:
Schmaltz is owed $7.5m in real dollars this year, then $8.45m in 24-25 and $8.5m in 25-26.

Isles get someone to play top line with Horvat and Barzal
ARI
  1. Pageau, Jean-Gabriel
  2. Wahlstrom, Oliver
  3. 2024 1st round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
Pageau is owed $4.5m in real dollars this year, then $4m in 24-25 and $3.5m in 25-26.

Schmaltz can play C but he’s predominantly a W. Yotes have one of the weaker C core’s in the league. Guenther isn’t that far away from the NHL and he could replace Schmaltz in time. Wahlstrom could use a new start somewhere with more playing time as well. Plus the draft capital.

Arizona would definitely want a 1st instead of the 2 other picks.

Pageau is overpaid and not what Arizona needs and doesn’t fit their timeline and wahlstrom has panned out to what he was supposed to be. Not a whole lot attractive assets coming back for arizonas 2nd/3rd best forward

I’d be fine with a first round pick. Not sure how hard AZ would push back on it vs a 2nd and 3rd with the actual cash savings. But yeah I’d do it

Edit: made the trade a 1st round pick

I changed it to a 1st round pick since your comment but I think this is fine and along the lines of the DeBrincat package.

You can’t use the DeBrincat trade as an example since he would only go to Detroit lol

You say AZ is weak at center and Pageau doesn’t even fix that nor has any value like wahlstrom
