Pageau to the desert

Created by: joshelkin

Description
I don’t see JGP as a cap dump. He is a very capable 3C who can PP/PK and play a 200ft game and win key faceoffs. The Islanders have some of the best center depth in the league, which could make Pageau expendable if the right moves line up.

IMO the most likely thing the Islanders try is a “DeBrincat” like package (JGP+Wahlstrom+1st) for a player who would be a bigger upgrade. However, I do think you can try to get creative with Pageau get 2 ‘lesser’ but still impactful guys for the cap space he takes up

I tested this trade in the trade machine and it was approved. Isles have the space to make it work
Trades
NYI
  1. Schmaltz, Nick
Additional Details:
Schmaltz is owed $7.5m in real dollars this year, then $8.45m in 24-25 and $8.5m in 25-26.

Isles get someone to play top line with Horvat and Barzal
ARI
  1. Pageau, Jean-Gabriel
  2. Wahlstrom, Oliver
  3. 2024 1st round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
Pageau is owed $4.5m in real dollars this year, then $4m in 24-25 and $3.5m in 25-26.

Schmaltz can play C but he’s predominantly a W. Yotes have one of the weaker C core’s in the league. Guenther isn’t that far away from the NHL and he could replace Schmaltz in time. Wahlstrom could use a new start somewhere with more playing time as well. Plus the draft capital.

Arizona would definitely want a 1st instead of the 2 other picks.

Pageau is overpaid and not what Arizona needs and doesn’t fit their timeline and wahlstrom has panned out to what he was supposed to be. Not a whole lot attractive assets coming back for arizonas 2nd/3rd best forward

I’d be fine with a first round pick. Not sure how hard AZ would push back on it vs a 2nd and 3rd with the actual cash savings. But yeah I’d do it

Edit: made the trade a 1st round pick

I changed it to a 1st round pick since your comment but I think this is fine and along the lines of the DeBrincat package.

You can’t use the DeBrincat trade as an example since he would only go to Detroit lol

You say AZ is weak at center and Pageau doesn’t even fix that nor has any value like wahlstrom

I have thought that Schmaltz is a potential trade chip for a while but I just don't see AZ making any trade for him anytime soon. Schmaltz is a part of how Keller stays happy with the team through this arena BS and eleventy-seventh rebuild. Without Schmaltz (best friend on team) being Kellers dependable linemate I could see Keller going the Chychrun route and wanting a fresh start somewhere else.

Side note: wonder how Chychrun feels about the Sens being a bottom feeder and the Yotes pushing for a playoff spot? He left because he wanted to be on a team that would compete in the post season. AZ stock is rising faster than OTT these days.

Pageau is better than Bjugstad or Kerfoot IMO

He’s still an expensive 3C for a player who’s on a pretty good contract at about a point per game. Doesn’t make sense for Arizona to do this unless they’re desperate to move him and get a 1st

I think the only reason Schmaltz might go is money. When AZ signed him to that backloaded contract years ago I wonder if they either expected to 1) trade him before they began paying it or 2) thought the arena/everything would be sorted out and money less of an issue

I just said it above but the only reason I think Schmaltz could be available is the money aspect

They still want to compete and could probably get a better offer. They would become worse if they made this move

I dont see AZ at this point taking 31yo 3C (who is pretty expensive for that role) to give up top line W (bestie w keller etc), the first is great but middle 1st wont contribute for few years. For AZ if they want to upgrade roster, they have cap space, deep pool, tons of picks, and a few cheap useable UFAs (that can be TDL), AZ can upgrade roster without sacrificing current roster. If AZ wants to upgrade they need top 6 scoring C and top pair D, and can as stated overpay w prospects/picks etc

bjug is great in his role for this team (25games 17:30m, 6g 10a +8 PP2, PK), and kerfoot (25games 16:30m, 2g 14a +4 PK) role is swiss army knife guy.

People put wayyyyy too much emphasis on the money. There’s an overall team budget, if you’re paying more than the cap hit on a player like Schmaltz, you’re likely paying less than cap hit for some of the veterans. We need to re-sign our entire defense, do you really think they wouldn’t just make up the $1.75m cash to cap hit difference in those contracts so it’s a non issue? It’s asking those guys to take like $350k less the first two years of the deal to keep a star player

Keller - Schmaltz are a dynamic combo. Little chance Schmaltz is available.

What the Coyotes NEED is a top pairing RHD.
