Description
Preparing myself for the off-season by imagining a worst-case scenario.

Assumptions:
1. Laine doesn't return next year.
2. Mateychuk and Jiricek are not ready and spend the season in the AHL.
3. They fall to #6 in the draft lottery.
4. No big trades.

Results:
1. Sign a top scoring veteran UFA on a relatively short-term deal. Marchessault sounds ideal.
2. Bring in Brenden Dillon, keep Adam Boqvist.
3. I assume it takes Celebrini, Demidov, Lindstrom, Levshunov and Buium off the table. I guess that they then choose Berkly Catton.

Conclusion:
Development year. One step at a time.

I love Boone, but the time of him being the 1C should be over. Fantilli is the 1C going forward.

It's going to be another development year whether the draft pick is Celebrini or sixth overall.

Also this is Columbus. Pencil in worst case scenario as guaranteed.

Not only will we fall to 6OA, Chicago will get 1OA and Pittsburgh wins the other lottery to nab 3rd OA. We get to watch Celebrini and Bedard become Kane and Toews 2.0 (but better) and Pittsburgh lands another elite talent in Demidov that torments us for the next 20 years.

The Hunters are hired as coach and GM. Provorov gets a hefty extension, Elvis sticks around for another year after a buyout/trade falls through. Jiricek demands a trade due to mismanagement, and Johnson follows suit once he gets healthy. Fantilli is injured in the presseason and out for the year. Yet, with all that, Gaudreau bounces back and leads the team to a 35-win, 80-point season; just bad enough to finish well out of wildcard contention and just good enough to land outside the top 10 picks or so.

Voronkov leaves for Russia and Texier returns to France.

I'd absolutely love to see it, but I don't expect it.

Sloppily formulated description from me there. This is a realistic worst-case scenario and my conclusion is that either way, next year is a development year. However, the size of the step taken will be smaller than I personally would have hoped for. With that said, who knows? Maybe a smaller step now is better in the long run.

You know what they say, hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

Oof, that's just depressing. Do they sell the team to Meruelo too? I tried to keep it within the realms of reasonable probability.

It does make me curious about a Jiricek trade scenario though... wink

The team stays with the McConnells and continues to be run by Priest, a fate worse than Meruelo. Meruelo is incompetent enough to lose the franchise to a competent owner; Priest is competent enough to mire the franchise in mediocrity forever.
