Columbus declines. The only player in the league they’d move Johnson for is Pettersson.

Laine at center lol
He looked great at C today, although it was against Buffalo’s AHL defense. I think Fantilli missed having him on his line, though. I think they’re best paired together.
Mateychuk is making the team, even if he ultimately only gets his nine games before he goes back to junior. He was quietly the best defenseman yet again today, and that was on a team with both Werenski and Jiricek.
This team will live and die by its goaltending. Elvis doesn’t have it, and Martin is worse.

You can just have Bean. Columbus has no room in the NHL or AHL for defenseman, even with moving Bean out.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>cbjthrowaway</b></div><div>claimed for "some reason" is actually two reasons:
1. they only have three goalies on NHL contracts right now
2. one of those goalies (tarasov) is hurt and won't be back in time for opening night
he'll be the backup until tarasov is back (who knows when that'll be), then one of them will get sent down. they needed someone who could be a #3 goalie and that's pretty much exactly what he is.</div></div>
Plus maybe a little kick in the pants for Elvis.

They shouldn't have. Another bad Jarmo move.

peeke
Both sides decline the deal as offered. Foegele has much more value to Edmonton than he would to Columbus, where he's just another bottom-6 body in a sea of them. A single second for Peeke is more than fair. It doesn't even have to be the 2024 one.

I know it's not the point, but you can't trade a player back to a team that still has them on active buyout. Wennberg literally cannot play for Columbus til his buyout is off the books.

You'll be very disappointed. He's been paired with a roving offensive Michigan product number one LHD before and it didn't work.
He'll be a solid PK and bottom pair defenseman on a good team, though. He is just very much not built for top pair minutes or workload.

Deadline deal
I'm in favor of the trade simply because Lindholm is better than either player right now, but I don't know that I like the extension. I get that six years probably requires a higher AAV but I am very leery of 9.5 to Lindholm when we're looking at having to pay Johnson and Fantilli a lot of money during that term period, and probably Jiricek too (I could see Marchenko being moved in a goalie deal, for example).

You can keep Ceci. Peeke for the picks is fine. Columbus has too many bodies at RD as it is.

And I'm telling you that Columbus isn't taking Joseph, period. They have two similar players whose combined cap hit is less than his and less term remaining, and desperate need for cap space as soon as next summer. Talk to Anaheim or pony up what Briere wants.

The dark ages
Well, something's gone catastrophically wrong again if Columbus is in the bottom five again with the talent they've got. They should have never been in the top five last year, and wouldn't have been if not for injuries and Jarmo just letting Larsen flail in order to tank once the writing was on the wall. It probably won't be Jarmo making the decisions next summer even if they manage to play to their actual ability this coming year, but if it is, this doesn't seem like a Jarmo move.
Buying Elvis out is cheap after this season, and certainly a better option than dropping from third to fifth if everything goes wrong again and they're at the bottom. No way a new GM comes in to an even angrier fanbase and makes his first move dropping in the draft.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sens65</b></div><div>Which is where the sweetener comes in.</div></div>
Having to also give up Adam Boqvist pretty much negates whatever "sweeteners" are in this trade. And I don't see anything that's remotely sweet. Thomson <em>might </em>be the sixth or seventh best defense prospect in the Jackets' pool and with his handedness there is essentially zero chance of ever getting an NHL game with Columbus, Crookshank has no value at all, and that second is more than likely closer to being a third.

Yeah, but Columbus already has two guys under contract who fit the same "fast as hell but has hands of stone" mold in Foudy and Robinson. No sense in taking on the risk that Joseph can't be flipped when you've already got similar players on the roster, especially when the players already here have a combined cap hit less than Joseph's.

Mathieu is the hard no. Yes, Columbus has cap space right now, but they very much will not as soon as next season.

Jiricek and Mateychuk both making the team
I'm going to need to see more of both of them, but just from what I saw in person on Sunday, Mateychuk is going to make the decision hard on the team. Yes, he's going back to Moose Jaw, obviously. But he's going to make the choice hard. Since there's no clause saying NHL or bust for Jiricek, he's headed to the AHL to start for sure. Even Gudbranson didn't look bad and at times looked good in that first game. I'm personally ready to move on from Peeke and Boqvist both.
