Coping pt 2

I don't. The Blue Jackers have an overpaid goalie with term already in Merzlikins and now they should take on another one in Kuemper?
A month or so ago, there were proposals for a Merzlikins-Kuemper swap. It seemed to make sense at first, but it turned out that would be horrible for the Blue Jackets since Kuemper is actually more expensive to buy out than Merzlikins is.
So for me, Kuemper is a no-go.
EDIT: Removing the Kuemper part of the trade would make me slightly more positive. But only if Laine demands a trade.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Renegade_H</b></div><div>Woah Woah Woah buddy. Gaudreau does not get traded for actual assets of interest. He's a negative value at that contract. Retain 2.5M, trade a 1st WITH him, and maybe a team will consider.</div></div>
The guy that was tied for 12th most 5v5 primary assists in the entire league while playing on a bottom feeder has negative value? Go figure.

Fair enough. But as someone else said, they may get a player like Lindstrom in the draft, which would strengthen their centre depth going forward immensely.

Personally, I just don't see how trading Johnson at his lowest value (hopefully) makes sense. I would only include him in a deal for an established star-level player.

Sure, if they see some value in Dellandrea. I don't know much about him, to be honest, so I just figured a bottom 6 winger in his 20's is not what Columbus need. But I would have said the same about Nylander a year ago, so what do I know?

Columbus accept. I think they'd prefer to retain less and just take the 1st, but I think they'd take that too. But I doubt Toronto do that anyway.

Switch Dellandrea and the 5th to a higher pick (4th would do) and Columbus probably accept. It depends on what they want to do with Mateychuk.

Worst-case scenario
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BoomerTheHero</b></div><div>I love Boone, but the time of him being the 1C should be over. Fantilli is the 1C going forward.</div></div>
I'd absolutely love to see it, but I don't expect it.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>squashmaple</b></div><div>It's going to be another development year whether the draft pick is Celebrini or sixth overall.
Also this is Columbus. Pencil in worst case scenario as guaranteed.</div></div>
Sloppily formulated description from me there. This is a realistic worst-case scenario and my conclusion is that either way, next year is a development year. However, the size of the step taken will be smaller than I personally would have hoped for. With that said, who knows? Maybe a smaller step now is better in the long run.
You know what they say, hope for the best but prepare for the worst.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CaseyFlyman</b></div><div>Not only will we fall to 6OA, Chicago will get 1OA and Pittsburgh wins the other lottery to nab 3rd OA. We get to watch Celebrini and Bedard become Kane and Toews 2.0 (but better) and Pittsburgh lands another elite talent in Demidov that torments us for the next 20 years.
The Hunters are hired as coach and GM. Provorov gets a hefty extension, Elvis sticks around for another year after a buyout/trade falls through. Jiricek demands a trade due to mismanagement, and Johnson follows suit once he gets healthy. Fantilli is injured in the presseason and out for the year. Yet, with all that, Gaudreau bounces back and leads the team to a 35-win, 80-point season; just bad enough to finish well out of wildcard contention and just good enough to land outside the top 10 picks or so.
Voronkov leaves for Russia and Texier returns to France.</div></div>
Oof, that's just depressing. Do they sell the team to Meruelo too? I tried to keep it within the realms of reasonable probability.
It does make me curious about a Jiricek trade scenario though... ;)

But Oilers management will know this summer if he's willing to re-sign or not, because he's eligible to re-sign as of July 1st and they definitely will be having conversations. So if he intends to go elsewhere they will know 12 months in advance.
I'm pretty sure if Draisaitl goes, McDavid will too. If Draisaitl re-signs, so will Connor. They're tight.</div></div>
Maybe. If he says it depends on how they do in 24-25, they might bet on another shot at the Cup with him and McDavid.
On a side note, though I would of course dearly like to see Draisaitl in Columbus, it would also make me very happy to see the Oilers win a Cup with McDavid and Draisaitl. They are so much damn fun to watch.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CD282</b></div><div>Draisaitl won't ever become a UFA though. In the unlikely event he informs the Oilers this summer that he won't sign in Edmonton, he'll get traded to a team he's willing to sign with.</div></div>
Sure, but I don't see him doing it this summer. If he doesn't want to re-sign in 2025, it doesn't really make a difference to him if he's traded (he has full control over where and if he is traded) or if he goes to UFA. Either way, if he wants out, I think Columbus should go after him. I do question whether the price paid here is worth it though. As I said, though, I expect him to re-sign in Edmonton.
EDIT: For some reason I thought he had a full NTC. Turns out he has an M-NTC. Then, depending, on the terms of that M-NTC, I'd agree he probably doesn't go to UFA if he wants out. Still, I maintain that the price given here is too much.

Time to Make It Happen
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jacketsman61</b></div><div>The ranges in this draft are very interesting. There are going to be some players that are going to fall and moving down to improve the D is not a terrible idea. This is an aggressive move to try and make this team competitive. SJ has no reason to move Ferraro so the Jackets have to give them a reason to. The Jackets are a team that doesn’t need to get involved in FA bidding wars. They are better to move assets to bring him in now. We have a lot of players we need to find space for and this would help while giving us a legit 1-2 punch down the middle. Fantilli is great but he is not ready to carry the team. We need Draisaitl to be a player who can instantly make Gaudreau a factor again.</div></div>
If I recall correctly, the top 10 is really good, while the late 1st round is a step down and not all that different from the 2nd round. So I would be keen to keep that top 6 pick and not be very interested in trading down to a 13th or 14th. At this stage, I would rather see them just sign a player like Brenden Dillon, keep the top pick and try to sell Provorov at 50 % retained for another 1st.
I agree that the CBJ need to use some combination of our good prospects to get a fantastic player to take the next step. If Draisaitl decides to leave Edmonton, I wouldn't be surpried if he ends up a UFA though. The Blue Jackets would then be in a position to give him a really good offer. As I said, they are one of the few teams that can give him a high salary (in combination with lower taxes). In parallel with that, you can trade some of the prospects to strengthen the top 6, which would give Columbus Draisaitl and another top player. A sign-and-trade situation might be on the cards in the 2025 off-season and if so then yes, Columbus should be heavily involved. But even then, it will be a few teams involved and Draisaitl decides where he gets to go, so his salary will still be high. In the ACGM scenario, Edmonton have no incentive to move him and thus need a very strong offer. It's a pipe dream anyway. I assume he will re-sign in Edmonton.
Next year is a development step for the players and the season in which the GM starts to discern what players he wants to build around, in my opinion. Selling the sun and the mopn looking to compete next year already might have long-term negative consequences.

1. If the Blue Jackets want Draisaitl, they should aim to sign him as a UFA and not give away their entire future for him. They can afford paying him even up to $14 M if they want to.
2. I love Ferraro, but he is not worth that much.
3. The Bruins will not do that and will get much better offers from NJD, OTT and LAK, to name a few.

Apparently Keller is available
I assume that if the Coyotes move to Utah and if Keller requests a trade, they would want to make a hockey trade for another star player. In that scenario, I think that Utah would sign UFAs and start to spend draft picks to try and construct a good team to build a fan base. So this proposal would not appeal to them.

2024-2025 Season Start
I agree with many things here. I don't think the GM makes his big moves until 2025.
I'l discuss the Hanifin signing a little bit. I've thought about it too. I don't think it makes sense with Severson there to lock up around 7 million long term, even if Provorov is traded at the draft. It's going to make it really difficult when the young players look to get paid, I think. I also am a big believer in Mateychuk. So it's might well lead to a situation where you have to choose between Werenski, Hanifin and Mateychuk. Of those three, I'd rather have Werenski and Mateychuk than any other combination long-term.
If I could change one thing about the entirety of the Columbus roster, it'd be removing the NTC from Severson's contract. In that hypothetical, I'd move him out and try to sign Pesce. Now maybe you could trade Gudbranson (to Toronto or whoever needs a physical defensive D) and still get Pesce, but that seems unlikely.
The way Merzlikins is talking/acting, I think a buyout needs to happen this off-season. If Detroit are willing to trade Husso for him as some have suggested, that's great, but I don't think they are. Personally, I'd be looking to sign a guy like David Rittich on a short-term deal to let Greaves get another season to grow.
Regarding the young players, I think Mateychuk will be ready next year and I do think Jiricek needs ice time in the NHL. Next year should be all about making a small step towards the playoffs while letting the youth grow, in my opinion.

Columbus is in a good situation. Like Buffalo, they have an abundance of good young players and prospects and need to decide which will form their core. The rest they should use to trade for fewer but better players when such opportunities present themselves. Signing free agents can help too.

Same for Reinbcher, we wouldn’t do it. No way.
Mailloux WPG 1ST ( #20 maybe with the way it’s going ) at the max.
Mailloux alone probably has more value than KJ right now.</div></div>
I think you proved his point. Johnson is a very good player with very high potential, as such he is a crucial part of the future core of Columbus. A sophomore slump, coaching decisions not benefitting his production and a long-term injury do not change that. If the Canadiens want a vital part of the Blue Jackets' future, they are going to have to give up an equal share of theirs.
Oh, and everyone tends to think that everyone else overvalues their core pieces and prospects.
