Description
Pens, out of contention, trade Kunitz, Hornqvist, Perron, Lovejoy, and Cole at 2015-2016 season deadline for picks and prospects to desperate contenders.

Rebuild for the 2016-2017 season with toughness, skill, and youth throughout the lineup, all through free agency, and not trading all of our assets for players like we're so accustomed too.

I'm open to suggestions other than Downie.

Anyone know how much the cap is going up next year? I kept it the same as this year.

Gee Hibbs you don't want much....toughness, skill and youth. With Pens limited budget available for UFA signings, doubt if the Pens can accomplish all of this in one season.
First, you can't "just trade" Kunitz more than likely without taking salary back. Like the Downie and Prust signings. Don't think the Pens would have the money to sign Lucic and Byfulglien. The Pens gotta have their three young Dmen to step up and be NHLers.
Pretty much the same for Bennett and Sprong. Some cheaper UFAs and with less salary and term might be Weiss, Helm, Grabner, Polak, Russell, maybe Hawks Bickell.

Weak Canadian dollar makes a slow rise in cap....74m.

Saw this on Pensblog, hah.

Speculation after GM meeting was that cap rises maybe $3M, so I like to call it $73.4M for 16-17 and build from there.

Lucic is a) an asshole and b) would be friggin' wonderful on this team. Would love to have him so much. Unfortunately I think it's sort of a foregone conclusion that he either extends with a great fit in LA or takes it home to VAN. I simply cannot see him coming to Pittsburgh, as Iovely as that would be.

To that end, the ability/inability to sign both Lucic and Big Byf seems a moot point.

Byf seems perfect for the team, but is a really hard fit for us capwise, even with the extra $2-3M. When we talk of trading Kunitz, Palhal is right, we likely need some retention to make it work. Not a great lot, but some. Add to that our pending UFAs, and thing's are getting tight!

You think Maata signs for 2.75? Maybe for only two years it makes sense. If I'm GMJB (fingers crossed), my thought is to pay a bit more for longer term, as long as I can get it without going nuts on the price tag. There are a bunch more of those signings coming down the pipe, and is rather not be giving myself TWO Maata signings to work out in the same time I have Dumo, Pouliot, Sprong, etc.

Without Lucic, Byf makes more sense, maybe that works out. Fingers crossed he makes it to UFA, even if he's traded, and we can take a shot. Love him with Dumo.

Not a fan of either Prust or Downie, but I'm more of a skills jerk-- to my mind, you need one hulksmash D-man, and one player-fighter forward, and just be fast and solid for the rest. You already know we've tried Downie; don't think we do it again. I'm so annoyed we didn't grab Kassian off waivers right now. Kid could turn it around, and what have we to lose this season by trying it out?
