Description
I know some people probably are going to argue and say that this is a bad trade but I think both teams need to do it, Leafs could use the d help and rangers need the offense (keep in mind something around the hall trade)

How can you compare this to the Hall trade at all? Sorry you can't At least Hall and Larsson had similar term and salary.
Leafs want trying to make the playoffs and maybe more. So in this deal, the Leafs have traded for futures. DeAngelo who may never play in the NHL and distant first.
Hainsey has been solid for the Leafs and is a top 4 Dman and has 1.5m years remaining Nylander might be a star, and currently he is the # 1 RWer for the Leafs. Leafs aren 't trading those two pieces for 1.5 years of McDonagh.
Gee, why do folks constantly say the Leafs need defensive help? Didn't they just allow 2 goals last week in MSG? Didn't Nylander score a goal in that game? Oh, so did Hainsey.

No.. just no. We don't need another LHD. We have now Gardiner and Reilly in top4 and McDonagh would not play on right side. And yeah Borgman, Dermott, etc. If you do D trade with leafs count with taking Gardiner back plus pick or prospect and sending top-4 RHD to leafs. And Hainsey is our best defenseman from defensive side and is 3rd in D scoring on Leafs just 1 point behind Gardiner. And RH AHLer is bad asset too. First rounder would not be even top15 pick so it won't help leafs. Nylander would be C on rangers but I doubt Leafs even want to sell Nylander. He is staying count on that. No Leafs-Rangers trade will make sense. No RHD outside Shatty and Kampfer, while LH side is covered incredibly. And why on earth waive Desharnais who is 0.55/G player with 1mil contract?

and why does every leafs fan that doesn't want to trade Nylander or marner or basically anyone not named JVR+1st round pick use that excuse like any McDonagh-trade have to happen during this regular season? almost nobody seems to think that "hey maybe this trade can happen during offseason when we can talk contract expansions which could make the trade worth it if NYR adds something of smaller value" if you don't wanna trade the lesser two of the big three then fine, but the 1.5 years of McDonagh excuse is starting to get really boring and repeated now

No what gets really boring and repeating is the lack creativity shown by folks that want to dump Dman with short term on the Leafs for one or more young stars. 75% of posts for Doughty, OEL and now McDonagh HAVE to be traded to the Leafs. Gee there are 30 trading partners for the Rangers. And this crap about making a trade and THEN talk about an extension has no merit for the original trade.

Truth is, Leafs will likely Nylander and their youngsters. In the summer of 2019, they will see how their cap situation is, and then maybe sign a UFA like McDonagh, OEL, Doughty, Karlsson or even Gardiner (hope not). See there are more prudent options then to think the a team that is no position to win the Cup this year (the Leafs) would be give up some futures. I'm talking about being prudent with assets in a cap world and knowing your team. This begging to take on good and very good players just because it seems like a good idea for one team , doesn't necessarily make it good deal for the other. And add non factual caveat "it's like the Hall trade", well it like someone is trying to be sneaky.

I know a lot folks try to make trades on this site (well it is a trading site) for equal playing ability. What often considered (as is this trade) is the trade value such as where the team stands for their playoff aspirations now and in the future.
And as SammyT51 corrected illustrated, Leafs have depth and competence at LHD. Hainsey plays the right side where the Leafs do lack depth and one spot of competence. So if Nylander or someone of his ilk were to be traded it would be for a position of need.

You say" and why does every leafs fan that doesn't want to trade Nylander or marner". Same reason I don't see Aho, Ehlers, Schifele, Barzal, Barkov, Jones, and lot of other young cost effective, good NHL regulars being traded on this site often. But again, , when Leafs fans turn them down, Leafs fans are considered irrational.

Don't want to trade Nylander. Not a shot at McDonagh, he's a great player, but Nylander has tons of upside, is young, and controlled.

Hainsey is worth way more to the team than he would fetch in a trade too. I personally consider him near untouchable for this reason. He IS our PK, and has let Rielly develop to his full potential. I don't want him gone one bit.
