Description
Alzner was the wrong player to sign at the wrong time for Montreal. Maybe he is still a good fit for Washington? Upgrade to Orpik and he's already familiar with the team?
DLR hasn't found his place in Montreal, so Washington could give him an opportunity as a depth pickup and if he performs well, replace someone next season.
Montreal gets an offensive RHD prospect that they don't have alot of.
Orpik is no Markov, but is on par for the contract we should have on the books, basically reducing 2 bad decisions to 1.

Would Washington bite?

This only makes sense for MTL if they are rebuilding. We would be getting worse and paying more. The payout for this would be that in the future, we see a benefit to it.

Then, why does Wsh do this? They only get slightly better but take on more years for a player they didn't want to resign in the first place.

Not sure that Washington would, but if they are looking for even a slight upgrade on Orpik, bringing in someone who doesn't have to start at square one with the system can be beneficial late in the season.
What they can do with the little cap relief is a consideration as well. Whether that means DLR or someone else.
Montreal doesn't need to benefit beyond the loss of term on Alzner's contract. Even if Orpik is 3rd pairing, it's only for 2 years. I'm comparing that to the 5 years of Alzner on the 3rd pairing, since he doesn't partner well with Weber and with Petry it's debatable.
If Montréal doesn't rebuild, Weber and Petry are staying, so there's no fit for Alzner in the top 4.
If Montréal does rebuild, they've opened up a roster spot for someone younger in 2 years.
Win win from my perspective. smile
