Description
Only one trade here.
One trade, two drafted players making the move into the team, three extensions and three FA signings.

Now the explanation:
Samsonov is one of the biggest goaltender-talents in the world and this is the year he makes the move to NHL. Holtby will have two years left on his deal so it's the perfect timing to make the transition.

He's not the only russian player to join. Kovalchuk re-join the league so he can win the cup. Early reports placed him in a NY team but they don't really look like contenders this year so I place him in Washington instead. Five russian players makes a winning team. I don't believe he'll sign for 6m+ like several other seems to, 3-4 is reasonable looking at the age.
It's a one year contract so it won't effect them long term.

Desharnais provide depth on center. I considered Vermette but he's four years older.

I want to bring Johansen up and try him as third pair RD. I want him and Bowey to fight for that spot so I won't sign a FA RHD for that spot.
Djoos will suffer from the Cole signing but it will help the team.

I first gave Carlson a 7m contract but the expectations are at 6 so I changed it. I opted for the 6y term but I believe it will be 8.

Now to the trade.
First what Washington gets:
T.J. Brodie is a proven top4 defender with great offensive qualities. He can be what the guy the team need. Adding that they get rid of Orpik.

What does the Flames get?
Grubauer can be tried as their nr 1.
Wilson can give them some much needed aid on the right wing, allowing them to dump Brouwers contract.
Yes they take on Orpik as well for a year but placing him next to Stone or Hamonic in a third pair makes their team even better. They have Kylington and Andersson (among others) to challenge him for their third pair.

I believe the trade to be a good base, may need to add some picks to smoothen it but this is the core trade.

Carlson is going to get close to $8M.
Hard pass on Cole. He's a #5 dman on a contender. $3M is way too much for him plus Djoos is a lot better.
I would love Kovey but he isn't signing for $4M, probably between $5M-$6M.
Pass on Desharnias and Chiasson, we have kids better and younger.

Calgary would say no to that deal. If they could dump Brouwer, they would have already. Adding Wilson doesn't affect that. Taking on Orpik isn't worth it to add Grubauer while giving up Brodie. I don't believe Wilson has much value, as I could probably score 15 goals playing with Ovechkin and Kuznetsov.

Contract values - Carlson will get $7M-8M, Kovalchuk will get $5M-6M.

Five Russian players haven't made a winning team since 1998, and even then they were surrounded by Yzerman, Lidstrom, Shanahan and Murphy.

The report for Carlson says around 6, I believe 7 but as the McKenzie article I found said 6 I wrote it. That number doesn't matter really.
You do know that Cole has played a big part on a SC winning team for two straight years? It's not unlikely he'll get more then 3, I believe that 3x3 for a contender could intrigue him.
This is Kovalchuk 2018, 35yo. Not Kovalchuk 2011 28yo. No team with a decent GM will pay more then 5 for him and he wants to play on the Eastern and with a contender. Add on the fact that he left his old team.. 4m is more then he should get from a contender.
Desharnais and Chiasson are depth players and wont really be in the way. If they don't work out then just put them on waivers.

Wilson is a big upgrade from Brouwer. He might not be the skilled third piece to play with Gaudreau and Monahan but three skill-guys aren't always the trick. He can be the beef.
I said that the trade could use a couple of picks and they have players down the pipe to go up.

Bob McKenzies article said about 6, as I said in the description I believe it to be 7.
Only the biggest moron in the world would give Kovalchuk 6m, so Chiarelli might.. But a competent GM understands that it's Kovalchuk 2018 and not 2011. He's 35 at the start of the season, not 28. 4 million should do it for a contender, 3 should do it but the space for 4 was there.
