Description
Draft day move to jump up and get one of the elite prospects in the draft (assuming Montreal stays at 3). Montreal is light up the middle. Names has the two way game Montreal could really use and is plenty young enough to fit into anyone's rebuild (would love to keep him for an all-Russian third line, but you have to give to get). John Gilmour has shown promise as an offensive d man (something else Montreal needs), and is a Montreal native. 10th pick also included.

As for my lines:
Is it me, or does this forward group look more competitive/complete than last year's opening roster?
You can flip flop Chytil and Spooner if Chytil isn't ready for the full time center spot. I see him as a winger in the future anyway.
Brought back Nash on a 2 year deal. Provides leadership by example with a great two way game and flashes of elite offense (we also lack RW capable forwards).
Though I hate having Andersson on the 4th line, with solid wingers this line could really push for ice time and would outproduce most teams 4th lines. Carey had a pretty decent year on a bad team's 4th line. He provides some grit and can slot in at all forward positions. He wins the extra forward job unless Nieves has an unbelievable camp.

As for the D:
This on paper looks like the team's weak spot! Since cap won't be an issue for a rebuilding team this year, Staal survives yet another season (sigh), buyout comes next year when his cap hit will be half of what it would be this year. Brendan Smith gets a chance to redeem himself (what do you have to lose?), he makes too much money to sit in the minors. If all goes well, he learns from last year and comes in hungry/in great shape. He can provide some leadership and grit on the back end. If he does redeem, and the team is still not a payoff team, you can move him at the deadline for something. We need the other D prospects (Hajik, Rykov, Day, Lindgren etc.) to push for roster spots next season before the team can really be competitive.

In goal:
Old faithful, the only reason this team has been relevant for the last 13 seasons. While he might not be tip top Hank, he's still great and a top 10 goalie. I see 2-3 seasons left at this level before he really starts to decline. Georgie has proven he can handle the back up role, and it's a cap savings. He becomes a trade chip the following season when Igor is ready to cross the pond, thanks to the Allaire build-a-goalie factory.

very fair deal i would think Montreal would need to throw something into this deal since namestrikov is a top 6 already and entering prime ages i don't think it would be a lot maybe a 3rd n 4th rounders or just a 3rd. Rangers wouldn't touch their young players as they are rebuilding also.

Thanks for the reply. I felt the same way, but wanted to err on the side of more rather than less. I like Names, and I'd love to keep him for a sweet third line, but I don't think Spooner has the same kind of value.

The trade with Montreal makes a lot of sense for both sides. Rangers already have an influx of young talent soon to make the jump and habs aren’t able to fit top Centre prospect need at 3rd so dropping to 10 would allow them to take a Veleno type prospect while adding 2 solid players as well.
As for the lineup it’s a team that can very well fast forward the rebuilding process with production from the youth

Thanks for the reply. It feels like a fit to me as well. Like you said, there isn't really an overwhelming center in the draft. By moving to 10, Montreal can still select an impact player in the draft, fill the C hole and they get two young roster players who can contribute right away. While I like how the Rangers are filling out with talented prospects (especially down the middle and at D) I don't see a top tier scorer on the roster (Zibanijad is the closest thing). With the move, the Rangers get the impact scorer they need in either Svechnikov or Zadina. Names is a loss, but with Zib, Hayes, Andersson, Chytil Spooner and Howden, you have to figure they will be fine down the middle.

Someone get Gorton on the phone!

    (Montreal Fan)

Without getting into any argument of "fair or not", I am not sure how this deal appeals to Montreal at all. I understand this draft has no star future #1 center, but trading down to #10 and getting Namestnikov also doesn't address that. Not that I think Namestnikov is bad, but he doesn't fill our biggest needs (#1 C or #1 LD).

Montreal also has 4x2nd, 3rd, 3x4th,5th and too many wingers to move up if they see a "can't miss" center in the teens. With #3, at the very least, we fill Pacioretty's spot on the team and he becomes expendable to try to fill a #1 C or LD spot.

I understand why Ranger fans would like the idea, I just don't see it working for the Canadiens.
