Karlsson for giggles

Its too much to give up really. Karlsson is awesome but i i wouldn't make a deal like this without a signed contract extension in hand. One year of karlsson and he walks would hurt too much, especially if you eat ryans horrible contract.

I'd agree it's an overpay but McPhee has a history of overpayment on a splashy deal. And if you're Ottawa you absolutely have to get multiple pieces of significant value for EK65 if he's dealt. If I was McPhee I personally wouldn't do this. But with the success of this season, I wouldn't be surprised to see them try and turn to win now mode.

Bobby Ryan's contract is fine if he's a repeat thirty goal scorer. But the last couple years he's been grieving a lost relative and demoted to a third line role, and probably getting a little anxious about all the trade rumors and the fact that his play in no way justifies the absurd amount of money he earns from a team whose owner, retired on some sunny island, periodically calls newspapers to complain about money.

A change of scenery couldn't hurt, but it is so far from guaranteed to help. And Ryan's contract plus the one year of Karlsson add up to more than $34M for, basically, one year of Karlsson.

So, yes. The extension is not a condition of adding a fourth first round pick. A reasonable extension on Karlsson is a condition of taking on Ryan. If there's no extension, Ryan goes back to Ottawa.

Also, given that Melnyk says he doesn't bluff and has priced out multiple places to move the Senators if they don't stop losing money, team management would be insane to hold out for four first round picks plus junk. Just take the junk and dump the contract if you have a chance. Forget the picks. They were never yours. They were never going to be yours. Sorry.

McPhee has traded for an average of three veterans to help out at every trade deadline for more than a decade. We all know one prospect he gave up in one of those trades. Can anybody name a second one?

Bonus points if they played more than 2 NHL games.

If that is the price for Karlsson and taking Ryan back also which was supposed to minimize the price, what would be the price for just Karlsson alone? The next 10 years 1st round picks?
