I agree with Wabit. You're basically trading Zucker for a 2nd and two 4ths. We don't need (and very rarely have) a 23 man roster. Zucker will take a discount to stay here if he gets term. He won't be nearly as cheap as the $3.5 million you put in your Oilers roster but he won't be $6+ million either. Being tight to the cap for another year while we keep Zucker is a lot better than praying one of those 3 players pans out in 4+ years.
I do have a question for you though. If we could get him for the $3.5 million you think he should get, even without messing with the roster, why the hell wouldn't we sign him with $4.5 million in cap room? We'd have even more after you remove someone to open a slot for Zucker. That makes zero sense.

On 8 years Dumba is getting 7M.
If he asks for $7 million, I highly doubt he's going to be on this team anymore. Someone else can pay him that but he's definitely not a $7 million player at this point in his career.
Think of it this way, $7 million per for 7 years (since another team can't offer 8) is $49 million. For offer sheet compensation purposes, that would be $9.8 million per year. That's right on the edge of the 4 first round pick territory ($9,814,936 is the low end there). I don't think anybody values him nearly as high as their next 4 first round picks. I doubt anybody would want to give up their next 2 firsts, their 2nd, and their 3rd for Dumba either which is what they would do for a 7x7 offer sheet. If any GM does, I'd love to meet them because we would gladly take those picks.
