Top defenseman for a player who has not proven he is a tip forward and abona fide scorer for a player who has had 1 good year. Both trades are not very good for the Blues.

I don’t have a problem sending Petro to TOR for Nylander, but I think that I’d also want a draft pick or a prospect. I think Pietrangelo would waive his NTC to go there - hometown and contender. I’d rather bundle Petro with some other assets and try to pry Matthews away, but I know that’s unrealistic. NYI are not going to take Steen and his falling production and over-sized salary for a promising young top-6 forward, even if Steen agreed to the trade. Draisaitl for Tarasenko, maybe. How about Tarasenko, Fabbri, and Gunnarrson (or Dunn) for Draisaitl and Nurse?

The Blues are weird. Their window isn't closing because Tarasenko, Schwartz, Schenn, Parayko, and Pietrangelo are all in their primes, but they're also not good enough to be a contender. They have great prospects, but they are likely a few years away from being true impact players. The Blues are in a holding pattern where they might have two to three bad years between great years. Perhaps sacrificing this season and trying for Hughes might not be a bad idea, but is it really possible to tank with the core in its prime?

they won't be able to tank because the Blues aren't that bad. However, it's reasonable to finish just outside the top ten again. Which as we saw this year at the draft, could yield lots of talent just outside the top ten. I say don't trade for O'Reilly, keep this team (minus Steen, Sobotka, maybe Berglund) and retool.
