You can argue that the D needs work, or that Marner will get a bit more (8 is about max), but everyone can fit under cap while Marleau is here.
Notes: Could be Sparks, Pickard, or even Kaskisuo in net, likely under 1 million.
Kapanen gets Brown/Hyman deal (3@2.25). Could go as high as a 3x3.
Johnsson gets bridged (2 years). His cap hit could go anywhere from 1 million to the Brown/Hyman/Kapanen deal depending on play this year. Its also one of the reasons I want Kapanen to be moved to the left, to push Johnsson down and keep cap low.
Nylander's hard cap is the Pasternak deal. He is also 5th best player of his draft by points with comparable players ranging from 5.75 to 6.66. If he signs more then 6@6.5 fire Dubas.
Matthews will take the Tavares deal. Its basically what we were going to give him anyways. Best case scenario means he could take a touch less, but my bets on 8@11.
Now... the D (heh):
Rielly is a fine #1 D good cap, Captain Material (my personal preference). Not the best in the league, but an excellent #1 Dman for Toronto's play style.
Zaitzev had a bad year. Like really, really bad. He wont be that bad going forward. He will be like a right handed Jake Gardiner, with about 35-40 ish points a year.
Liljegren will develop into a top 4 Dman, if lucky, then a serviceable top 2 RHD (Think Right handed Morgan Rielly, but a step below). Hopefully he can become defensively sound enough to push Zaitzev to the 2nd pair (where Gardiner did well).
Dermott will be a sound #2 LHD, good with the puck, can move it, fine defensively, not great, better than good.
All we need is a shut down guy.
Igor Ozhiganov:
My dark horse player. If he works out, he is the RHD that Toronto needs. Can move the puck, crazy shot, big hitter, Excellent defensively. Will be a PK and shut down specialist. Can play power play as well.
Here's to hoping he works out.
Captains:
Rielly: 'C', Tavares: 'A', Marleau: 'A'
When Marleau leaves, give his 'A' to Matthews.
wow you are over the cap by 3 million and your defense is even worse than it is today.... this would be a disaster for toronto.... they have to trade forwards for some quality def. obviously.... I just wish they keep it this way and never get 1st pairing def. and never win anything in the playoffs.. go leafs go ...no

Not sure where they're over the cap. This team has the cap for 19/20 at 81.5M, personally, I think that's conservative meaning there's even more room if some players command more.

Also, just one more thing. The leafs D was 12th best in GA, and 11th best PK%. I am more than happy to say some of that was Freddy, but the leafs D was about league average, in a bad year for them. This D will get better and better, and has a highly underrated future (which considering we are talking Toronto is hilarious).
Good work except for the "Some Veteran." There's plenty of cap space on your team to promote someone from the Marlies or re-up Josh Jooris. And both Pickard and Sparks might sign for $800. But that minor quibble shouldn't cost you a star.
