Fat chance the Caps can afford both Tavares and Kane it's probably closer to $18 million then $17 million and your D is crap.

Fantastic forward corps. Three of the top thirty at center and at goal scoring winger. Add in one great starting goalie, and one solid top defensive pair, and this could be a juggernaut. Do you think they should trade Carlson and Grubauer at the deadline for a first and second pick, and a couple of prospects, rather than lose them for nothing?

Also, while that third defensive pair is a cringeworthy combination of a strong prospect's rookie season and a weak prospect's rookie season, I'd assume they could add a vet or two if they falter, without significantly altering their salary structure.

If the Caps can afford to add a top ten center and a thirty goal scoring winger next summer, both in their twenties, at a cost of their second defensive pairing, a great backup goalie, and a plethora of above average bottom six forwards, they absolutely should do it. I'm not sure the fourth forward line even plays an even strength shift every night, in that lineup. You've given up a ton of penalty killing, which will hurt in the regular season standings, but added even strength scoring and, if those defenders are ready to step in as average NHLers, improved overall puck possession. This is a team that can win more games in the playoffs, when there are fewer penalties. I still would try to find a way not to buy out Orpik, and let Ness walk instead, but I admit it'd be tough.
