Bobby Ryan Trade

Created by: CaptainFlynnt
Team: 2017-18 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 26, 2017
Published: Dec. 26, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This trade comes after trading Pacioretty.

Ottawa needs to get some cap space to re-sign Duchene and Karlsson and this deal provides them with $3M. Hudon can replace Ryan in Ottawa's lineup. With the loss of Methot, Alzner is needed in Ottawa much more than in Montreal.

Montreal gets a potential top 6 RH winger (if he can find his game again). They are taking a big risk here by acquiring an aging player who is already on the decline but they do get a decent C prospect as well.

Try to focus on the Ottawa trade, the pacioretty trade has already been discussed.

5 years of Ryan at 7.2 mil there better be more coming to Mtl, like Chabot

Just the idea of MTL paying Ryan’s high salary for 5 years on top of all their other horrible contracts makes me sick

I hear ya, but it is manageable and right now the Alzner contract is just as bad for Montreal. He makes $4.6M and he is redundant considering Montreal already has Weber and Benn to play the shutdown D role. This D needs to be more mobile and this is more about Alzner going out than Ryan coming in. Having said that Ryan is a skilled RH winger which Montreal does not have. He could be a valuable player for the habs PP. Batherson is having a great season in the QMJHL as well and he is a C (Coincidentally he is rooming with Mete while they play for Team Canada).

Anyways.. should Montreal ask for more in this deal? If so what do you think they should get?

That's not reasonable. Ottawa would rather keep Ryan.

God no to that Ryan trade, Ottawa would at least need to retain a lot to make it work. I'd do the LA trade for sure but I'm pretty sure they won't give up their two best prospects and a 1st for Patches (Jerabek doesn't have much trade value to speak of).

I understand why people are against the Ryan Trade.. I have actually already made a team in which Montreal hypothetically signs Tavares to an $11M contract and it works with Ryan. This reminds of a trade I made in the summer where the habs took Dustin Brown in order to get Jeff Carter. As is the case now, everyone said I was crazy to take Dustin Brown (even though it would have netted the habs the top C they desperately need. It would be a completely different story now, Dustin Brown has 29 pts in 37 games. Players can bounce back.. They received big contracts for a reason. Ryan also had 15 pts in 19 playoff games last year to take Ottawa to as close as you can get to the SC finals. Bobby ryan is a top 6 forward, even though he is overpaid.

With regards to pacioretty he is an Elite LW and LA sure could use one to play with Kopitar. Yes they are giving up there 2 best prospects but it's not like they are blue chip guys.. Vilardi hasn't even played a game this year due to a back injury and has skating issues. Clague is a good Dman but he isn't a guaranteed top pair. Jerabek is just included as a cheap depth d man for a team that is going on a cup run. LA has 2 years before they have to resign Doughty, and adding Pacioretty makes perfect sense for them.

If Ryan has to be in this deal, I would say at least $2mil would need to retained, even then with how much Ryan has fallen off the charts, with a $5mil cap hit is still a bit much

alzner for ryan is about fair if Ottawa retains 1.3m. then both teams can just say be on the hook for 5.9m each.

Ok this is constructive, but if you are Ottawa do you even make this deal then? You are basically paying $6.6M for Alzner now.

This makes sense as long as Ottawa sees the trade as Ryan = Alzner
Batherson = Hudon

I might be ok with a 5.9mil cap hit, but if it’s trading a bad contract for a bad contract, I’d keep Hudon. OTT can keep their prospect, and just have both teams put low level draft picks to even things out.

Doing this wouldn’t really hurt the Habs defense since when Mete comes back he can take Alzner spot, but it would create a log jam on the wing. And honestly, I’d rather just give Scherbak a shot with how well he’s doing in Laval rather then go and acquire Ryan.

I'm trading hudon because I don't have him in my future plans and I would rather acquire a C prospect. Ryan replaces Pacioretty, Scherbak replaces Hudon, one of galchenyuk or drouin will play C (I would prefer galchenyuk).

Heading towards a lineup of
Drouin-XXXXX-Ryan
Scherbak-Galchenyuk-Gallagher
Lehkonen-Danault-Shaw
Deslauriers-McCarron-Carr
XXXXX-Weber
Benn-Petry
Mete-Juulson
Clague

Why do you want bobby ryan so much ? he has a bad contract , 7m/year is way too much for the production he brings , he's very good tho , just look like he's lazy. Why not try to reach Duchene instead ?
