Byron's contract would be a fit for the Wild. I'm just not sure where he fits in their lineup without them moving a FWD or two.

Potential lineup with players under contract (Zucker RFA):
    Nino/Staal/Coyle
    Zucker(RFA)/Koivu/Granlund
    Parise/JEE/Kunin (should be NHL ready)
    Foligno/Ennis/???

Byron can play literally anywhere in your lineup. He can play all 3 forward positions, up and down the lineup. His greatest asset is his speed, if you put him in a position to score he will, if you need a PKer he can do that too. He's not great at anything except going fast, but in today's NHL that's valuable enough.

just what red wings would do, trade one of their two legit young potential stars. doesn't look like a team that Tavares would have any interest in signing with

He's alright in every facet of the game for what you expect from a winger, except like you said, he's fast. And when I say fast, I mean he's fricking flying out there. And is on a cheap contract. A 3rd round pick would be a lowball return for him.

I don't understand the need to trade Paul Byron: a guy who scored 22 last year, on pace for that this year, and is a 1.1M$ cap hit for this season, and next. Let alone, get a 3rd round pick for him. Paul Byron will get you much more than that if you decide to trade him.

You wouldn't re-sign him to a $3mil AAV deal? And you're still getting more than a year of him at $1mil cap hit. Not worth giving up a 3rd round pick whose chances of ever making it to the NHL as a regular player are not statistically favorable? Okay.
