Pacioretty Trade, from the Blues perspective

Created by: seb
Team: 2017-18 St. Louis Blues
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 3, 2018
Published: Jan. 3, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Montreal Canadiens are in dire need of prospects. The St-Louis Blues want to win a Stanley Cup for the first time. So, The Montreal Canadiens should trade Max Pacioretty at a retained salary to accomodate the Blues, who have almost no cap space. Plus, Montreal's second round pick goes the other way (it will be pretty high, I suppose). Vladimir Sobotka goes the other way for Montreal because St-Louis has to clear some cap space in order to do the trade. Plus, prospects Robert Thomas (who will play again on the same team as Victor Mete) and Klim Kostin (who would be a great addition to the Laval Rocket) pack their bags. This trade could be disastrous in the short run for Montreal, but I think it would be beneficial for both teams. Let me know your thoughts in the comment section below.

It looks good from the St. Louis perspective.

Not sure Sobotka holds much allure for Montreal, which will be rebuilding, but see the reasoning for it because of cap. That said, Montreal would likely rather not take him back (they could trade him again keeping a big chunk of his cap) From what I've seen, Thomas and Kostin are sound prospects, but there are any number of other prospects that St. Louis could use to round out a deal.

I think this is a great trade for the value perspective, but I'm just not a big Patches fan. He's not what the Blues need and I don't know how much better he'd do here than in MTL right now. If he was a RHS RW then yes 100%. If we luck out into Tavares this offseason (big if), then this move would make more sense.

Good deal from the Habs perspective as well! Having Thomas as a main piece coming in return is exactly what we need, and retaining on Patches and taking on Sobotka's contract is not hurting us too much cap-wise. I like Kostin too.
