retool for 2018

Created by: GMTD
Team: 2017-18 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 26, 2018
Published: Jan. 26, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Botterill moves as much cap as he can so he can build around Eichel, Reinhart and Ristolainen by signing young UFA, He trades for picks, prospects and players currently on LTIR.

He will have 6 picks in the 1st 2 rounds of next year. Are any of these trades going to take place, not likely. Are any of realistic, well I will let you decide. How cool would it be if this could happen. An NHL team as good as this current cast of losers with picks and prospects for the future.
Trades
1.
EDM
  1. Okposo, Kyle
Additional Details:
RNH is injured, EDM needs a RW, the salaries are the same (Okposo is a couple of years longer), only 4 years difference in age, EDM is only 10 pts out of a playoff spot, Peter Chiarelliis known for making big trades, RNH on LTIR will help the Sabres to finish lower in the standings. RNH on the roster will allow another center to be traded. I borrowed this trade from another contributor.
2.
BUF
  1. Bean, Jake
  2. Carrick, Trevor
  3. 2018 1st round pick (CAR)
CAR
  1. O'Reilly, Ryan
Additional Details:
Carolina is only 4 pts out of a playoff spot and needs a top center. ROR is one of the best FO players in the league winning over 61% of his draws. ROR with Stall gives them 2 good centers. Carolina gives up 2 good prospects and pick, they currently have the cap space to take on ROR contract. I borrowed this trade from another contributor as well.
3.
STL
  1. Pominville, Jason
  2. 2019 2nd round pick (BUF)
Additional Details:
Frabbri is on LTIR and could be out for the season. STL get a RW that they need and a good pick especially if the Sabres continue to perform in the manner that they are. Since Fabbri is LTIR his absence from the team will help to ensure a last place finish. Again I borrowed this trade from another contributor.
4.
BUF
  1. Greiss, Thomas
  2. 2018 1st round pick (CGY)
NYI
  1. Beaulieu, Nathan
  2. Lehner, Robin
  3. Moulson, Matt
Additional Details:
Buffalo retains 1/2 of Moulson's salary. Lehner would be a big upgrade in net for NY. Beaulieu adds depth to NY's defense, Moulson had his best years with Tavares as his center man, Garth Snow feels adding a little scoring and help in net will help close the gap, they are only 1 pt out of the playoffs now.
5.
BUF
  1. Meier, Timo
  2. O'Regan, Danny
  3. 2018 1st round pick (SJS)
SJS
  1. Bogosian, Zach
  2. Kane, Evander
Additional Details:
Sharks get the rough tough LW to balance their scoring and a RHD for depth. SJS give up 2 young players and a pick (less than what Botterill wanted). Buffalo gets 2 young prospects and a 1st round pick to start the rebuilding process. Botterill removes two under performing cancers brought in by DA Murray and creates $10,392,857 of cap space.
6.
BUF
  1. 2018 2nd round pick (NJD)
NJD
  1. Nelson, Casey
  2. Pouliot, Benoit
Additional Details:
NJD gets a right handed forward who can score and depth at defense. Botterill picks up more draft picks for his rebuild.
7.
BUF
  1. 2018 3rd round pick (TOR)
  2. 2018 7th round pick (WSH)
WSH
  1. Gorges, Josh
Additional Details:
Washington and Buffalo have a trading history, the caps look for a veteran on defense who is steady. This final trade gives Botterill 6 picks in the 1st rounds and at one pick in every other round.
8.
NYI
signed as a free agent during the off season.
    9.
    TOR
signed as a free agent during the off season
      10.
      WSH

The ROR deal is pretty fair but I think the Edmonton deal is way off. Nuge is younger, better, and a centre instead of a wing.

Umm.. Nugent-Hopkins is not on LTIR, he’s gone 6-8 weeks, there’s other ways to acquire a right handed scoring winger. Anyways, why would the Oilers trade their top goal scorer and arguably most consistent player for someone.. who scores less, is 5 years older and yet has a longer duration for a contract.. that’s a pass honestly. We’re already looking like more of a mess without Nuge, the Buffalo shutout was a testament to that.

I do not want to trade Oreilly.

I do not want to pay for josh bailey's outlier year and not what JVR will get on the open market

I actually agree, I borrowed this from another contributor. I was not sure how long RNH would be out, and since EDM could use a RW who as you say is older but similar scoring over their carriers (RNH games, goals, assists total pts 441 111 185 296, Okposo the same 641 167 276 443). As you know Peter Chiarelli is known for making big deals. But the deal breaker is age and Centers are always more valuable than wingers. Thank you for your comments.

I Know that is not what any of the UFA will get on the open market, I was only taking their current salary, I should have put in what I thought for what they would sign that was an over site on my part. But thank you for you comment. I think ROR is a good center but if you could make ALL of these deals (because we are adding 3 UFA) this team is better than the current cast of losers and has a great future. Remember this dumps over $30,000,000 salary enough to sign Reinhart and all of those free agents.

Yes I know, is that not wonderful to be able to sign free agents instead of trading picks and prospects for them. LOL, Actually all of the UFA salaries are current year, JVR, Bailey and Carlson will cost about $15,000,000 more than their current salaries.

Yup to Hopkins. I was reaching way too far on this one. Thanks for the great comment I greatly appreciate this sort of feed back.

And 4 really good prospects. Bean, J, Carrick, T & Meier, T are all former 1st round picks while Daniel O'Regan was a 5th but playing well in the NHL and 2 injured NHL players. As mentioned above RNH would be a unbelievable 2nd center for Eichel, and Fabbri as the 3rd is also unlikely to happen. I seriously doubt any of these trades would happen but wow, what a rebuild if they could.
