Description
PLEASE GOD DO NOT BRING NASH HERE. Call me greedy but I want a 5 year window to win cups. Yes, cups as in plural. Poile has already made the moves to make Nashville better than last year with Turris and Bonino since last year losing Joey exposed a slight lack of depth at center. Fabbro should be untouchable in case we are unable to retain Ellis when his contract is up. Tolvenan should also be untouchable since he was such a steal in the draft and there is still no certainty on his ceiling. The idea that Nash's asking price is a 1st and two players is outrageous. Nash has only put up 17 goals to this point and as of now I don't know how you break up the top two lines based off chemistry. That being said, Jarnkrok who is a 3rd liner on Nashville has 13 goals. Based of of playing time alone you could argue that Jarnkrok is more valuable than Nash in a 3rd link role. Bonino is cemented as the 3rd line center. The 4th line has two spots secured with Watson and Sissons. That leaves 2 spots left where the Preds already have Aberg, Hartnell, Salomaki, and eventually Fisher. I'd say all 4 are interchangeable in these slots but I will not disagree could be upgraded. I think best case scenario, is that Tolvenan is able to be signed and fill that 3rd line slot. If it doesn't work you already know what you got and this leaves cap space to resign Saros and hell they can bring Emelin back if they want which I don't mind whether they do or not. If Poile wants to get aggressive lets see what the asking price on Nyquist is. Nashville loves their Sweds and could have him for next season as well. Poile is a mastermind that has done incredible work in the off season and mid season... It's nearly impossible for a GM to win short and long term at the deadline. I'm fearful Nash will take a 5 year window and cost us a Ryan Ellis replacement in Fabbro or a potential top 6 all star in Tolvenan that would only give us a 3 year window or less depending on future moves they have to make due to potential future set backs from an ill advised move now. If you made it through my novel please let me know what you think from your perspective.

Woohoo a man with sense. I agree to stay away from Nash unless his cost is like a 2nd or Aberg and a 3rd. I would like to see what you would give up for Nyquist. Him on the the left side of the third line would be amazing. I love Hartsy but sometimes he looks a bit slow out there. Just my opinion tho. Fabbro and Tolvanen should be untouchable no matter what tho.

I'm a Rangers fan and while Nash is a good fit, you have an excellent point. Neither Rangers nor preds have to even bother. Someone else will be a sucker and give up plenty for him. Nashville keeps window open. But remember cap is increasing and Rinne comes off the books same year as Ellis. So they might actually be able to keep him.

Fair warning though: Elliotte Friedman did say today Preds are all in on Nash. So while your point is excellent and I fully agree with it, it unfortunately may not happen.

Nyquist would require a 1st since he has term left. They would ask for Fabbro no doubt. If they could pull off Aberg and a first and either a B level prospect or a future 3rd I think the discussion should start. Problem is that DET would have to retain money which would up the cost.

Excellent point with Rinne's contract expiring with Ellis's. Rinne will have to take a pay cut based on age and he's loyal like Lundqvist... Good ole Scandinavians. Time will tell his production between now and then that will also determine price but I can't see him over 5 mil and 3 years.

As far as considering the cap escalator I feel like it's smarter to utilize that as future wiggle room then to rely on using it prior to the space being there but that's more my own philosophy.

Either way I hope Hitchcock puts pressure on Nill to out bid Nashville. After all Dallas is a one line team for their production and could use offense depth. I also feel like they are thin on D too but there is only so much you can do and Hitch's system may be able to get by without all star depth on the back end.

Elliot is due to be wrong for once...

I've heard from Wings fans both here and elsewhere that they'd be happy with Aberg and a 2nd or our 2019 1st. If we can get Nyquist for that, I would do it in a heartbeat. Aberg hasn't panned out this year and a change in scenery would be good for him because he's just gonna get hurried here, especially with Tolvanen coming over if not this year then next. Also, I've seen nothing to think GMDP is that desperate in past trades. Sometimes insiders just stir the pot to create buzz. I think it's far more likely that no one is accepting the NYR offer and are trying to talk the price down to a reasonable level. Someone will cave and maybe take a bad deal, but that's usually not Poile.
