Trying to win it this year with everything they got.

Description
Someone needs to sit down with Beagle, and make a videotape of every assist he ever came up with, and just let him watch them on repeat and discuss what went right for an hour a day until the deadline before he gets to play with wingers this good, but they're not giving up his faceoffs or breakouts, and the're pretty set at center, so that's what they've got to do. Not sure about value on any of these, but I think Francis probably played with Orpik at some point, and might see his value for a playoff run, and of course Johansen will replace him in a couple years at a much, much lower cap hit, with the most upside of anyone in that deal. The other two are pretty negotiable. Just some players who aren't playing in the playoffs or next call up, and some picks, for some guys who could help Washington compete in these playoffs.

Not enough for Nash or Slavin. Probably not enough for Domi unless ARI loves Copley and McGauley.

Orpik isn't better than Slavin this year, but he brings grit and playoff experience, and Carolina's other left D are good enough to eat up the difference of two minutes between them.

Johansen, in two years, will be better than Slavin, and the Caps will kick themselves of this deal... except that it gives them cap space to add Domi and Nash, and get to the Conference finals with that much more toughness and scoring ability on the wings, and Slavin will still be a steady, defense first guy who gets the puck up the ice--the kind of guy all teams covet, and Caps fans boo out of town.

I don’t think Carolina would make that deal if you take Slavin out of it... let alone adding him in!!! Carolina gets absolutely ripped off

Nash and domi are worth way more than that as well. All 3 trades heavily in Washington’s favour

TVR is 27 and playing as a solid #5? What's the ceiling? #4?

Johansen is a recent first round pick, currently 45th among defensemen in scoring in the AHL There are eight rookies ahead of him at that level (https://theahl.com/stats/player-stats/all-teams/57?playertype=skater&position=defencemen&rookie=no&sort=points&statstype=standard&page=1&league=4).

Christian Djoos, the guy who narrowly him for an NHL spot out of camp, led Hershey in playoff scoring last year, and is 6th among NHL rookie defenseman in points. Lucas Johansen is going to be good.

All that said, I'm interested to hear if anyone would propose a trade fro Domi or Slavin that doesn't cut into the Caps' roster? Would more picks get it there, or if they have to move a current player, is there a cheap replacement rental who can fill that spot.

The only reason to get Nash is to win this year. His cap hit is huge. He's not scoring at a level that justifies it. He's on pace for 40 points. But The Rangers are cleaning house, and probably aren't selling on Kreider, and Grabner is going to have too much of a bidding war, and then go somewhere random this summer as a UFA.... so...

Oh, you're one of those.

He plays 20 minutes a night with 42% offensive zone starts, 8 points, and 160 hits on a division leader. The Caps are 4-0-0 in games when Orpik plays at least 23 minutes.

Yes, Slavin is better, but Orpik is the kind of leader with a Cup ring and a chip on his shoulder who teams pay out the nose for at this time of year. For all we know, he could fetch Slavin straight up.

confused Johnson for someone else so yeah he’s a good prospect but... last season slavin was Carolina’s best D. No way they move him. Orpik isn’t as good as TVR either. Not a good trade for Carolina either way.

Orpik couldn’t even fetch TVR let alone slavin. He 100% has negative value. If Washington could move him... they would

Orpik has never been better than Slavin in any years. Ever. The issue is you're the only one that thinks Orpik's "grit and playoff experience" means anything. It doesn't. At all. Especially to an organization like Carolina. They are one of the best teams at paying attention to possession and analytics. They can see through any bull crap to try to sell Orpik to them. If you want to sell Orpik you have to go to a dumb team that will look at that "grit" and think it's actually useful. VAN and EDM come to mind, though I think EDM has a crap ton of LHD already.

I don't personally want to sell Orpik. He plays 20 minutes a night, with 3/5 shifts starting in the defensive zone, and his corsi is about equal to his zone starts in spite of a pretty tough quality of competition. He's an effective stay at home defenseman who makes it possible for Djoos and Orlov to take easier shifts and score a bunch of points.

Between Orpik, Ovechkin, and WIlson, Washington has a pretty tough team, that dishes out a lot of solid checks, and I think that's a decent part of why they've won the first round in each of the last three seasons.

But there are other tough guys available at this deadline and if Carolina wanted to swap Orpik for Slavin with any other combination of whatever, that would open up a ton of cap space for the Caps to add a couple of tough wingers who could score some more goals, at a cost of lots more picks and prospects. If not, no big deal. Orpik's a beast.

Thanks for your feedback.
