Realistic Draft/Offseason Plan

Created by: dchill
Team: 2018-19 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 12, 2018
Published: Mar. 12, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
No, Tavares isn't signing with Montreal.

Key points of the draft/offseason:
1) Trade Patches - he deserves better. A great centre prospect and a conditional first if he resigns is a good enough haul.
2) Use cap space to take on salary in order to get better prospects and picks (see Philadelphia and Tampa trades)
3) Probably going to draft in the 5-8 range, take Oliver Wahlstrom
4) Build a better AHL team in Laval. Get prospects who can play meaningful minutes there and contribute to a winning culture that will bolster prospect development.
5) Trade away some of the defencemen on the roster, make room for the younger d-men to play and develop (Mete, Reilly, Juulsen)
6) Take a run at Jake Evans (a habs draft pick) and Jimmy Schuldt (has attended habs development camps) coming out of college, try to convince them to sign in Montreal with the promise of NHL ice time in the 2018-2019 season.

Following a plan like this could see the team take a step towards drafting and developing correctly, trying to fill the prospect cupboards back up (the 4 picks in the 2nd round are key) and build towards a perennial playoff team in 2-3 years. This is basically the Boston Bruins approach, with a little variances here and there. Look how thats turned out for them.

As a plan, this looks really solid. Not sure though if Callahan would waive his NMC for rebuilding team like Habs.

Oh, and I don't think Kings will trade Vilardi - they were so lucky with getting him in the latest draft, he's gonna be a big part of their team as a 2C in 3-4 years. I'd probably go look from team like FLA or ARZ who has a number of C-prospects (in FLA there's Borgström or Heponiemi and in ARZ there's Strome, Dvorak, Merkley etc.) or something like that.

Agree and agree. Nice to see a post that actually makes sense. The Shaw trade is the only one I'm not 100% on board with.

My thought process was out of those teams, LA is the most ready to compete for a cup. With Kopitar and Carter signed for the foreseeable future down the middle, I thought they'd be willing to part with him to acquire an elite goal scorer who could really thrive playing with those two centres and help out a team thats starved for goals and seemingly all in while they have Doughty under contract for only 7 million a year.

Shaw is a good player, but I do not think he will be worth nearly 4 million a year in the final 2-3 years of his contract. He's a great playoff guy for a team thats competing, but unfortunately i don't think the habs will be competing in the next 2 years. Thats why you take a bad contract back in MacDonald, and acquire a great defensive prospect in Myers. Also, the Habs have prospects that can replace Shaw and his role in the next couple years (Will Bitten comes to mind). As a whole, I see this trade as accepting 2 years of pain in order to gain cap space and prospect capital that could really help in the long run. The only thing i could maybe think of changing is adding more to the deal from the Philly side of things.

LA C-depth....for yearssss
Kopitar- Carter- even Brown is a formal C... and have young's like: Kempe- Iafallo, Amadio that played C in Junior as well... so they can afford losing Vilardi for a Top LW to play with Kopi.

Shaw will only be between 28-30 years old in those years. What makes you think he won't still be a contributor then? Has the perceived age of infirmity here gotten that low?

he is 26 and makes 3.9mill. he can score 20 goals a season, play pp, pk, good in front of the net. he can play up and down the line up, and is good in the dot as well. plus he is a great guy to have on the bench and in the locker room, and stands up for his team mates on the ice. for 3.9mill, thats not bad
