Description
Line up in a couple years

The forward lines show no huge acquisitions. In two years time I think Nylander will have transitioned to centre and pairing him with Kapanen and Johnsson gives us a very speedy and elite skilled line. Obviously that leaves a hole on the first line RW which Brown can easily fill. He has the skill and IQ to play up and down the line up. It also allows us to keep a third line with Marleau-Kadri-Marner which would be one of if not the best third lines in the league. And the fourth line still has skill in Bracco, sandpaper in Grundstrom and a fourth line centre in either brooks of Aaltonen, whomever develops better.

Defensively we have one big signing in Doughty. It finally gives us a top pairing in Rielly-Doughty that can shut down opposing players for 25 mins a game. Then I signed Moore because at that cap hit, we would get a defenseman that can shut it down for at least 20 minutes a game. Even as a 5-6 D, he would be a stable partner for Zaitsev. Lastly we have Dermott-Liljegren. Until they develop into a strong second pairing, they can play sheltered minutes and really learn from Doughty.

Goalies are Anderson and whomever excels out of Sparks, Pickard, Woll and Scott.

We would still have a lot of picks and plenty of prospects. Timashov and Rasanen would be our biggest X factors for prospects as well as those we draft with our 2018 and 2019 draft picks.

Salary wise I may have over paid for some (I think Marner and Nylander are closer to 6-6.5 for 6 years, kapanen probably 3.5 for 4 years, Doughty 11 for 7 years) but its to show the cap works. Next year you would have Marleau coming off the books freeing up 6.5 million in cap and the cap rising about 3 million would give us 9.5 million to resign players and get a 3 line LW (if not from within)

It's hard to grasp the concept that Matthews is saddled with 4th liners for his career.

Hey, I know its not ideal, but realistically, I would much rather 3 very strong lines that are a threat to score every night than 2 really gifted lines but nothing after it. Matthews played with them before and got strong numbers and until we develop some more elite talent on the wings, it would suffice. They could be traded for better players as part of a package later on. Plus, the first line would be paired with Doughty and Rielly more often so Matthews would still have one of the best defensemen in the world to work with in Doughty.

I used to watch Kessel come to the bench after a shift where he had to do everything because the supporting cast was so bad. He had this look all the time that said "find me someone to play with"
This team can't have success if their best player is playing with depth/role players.

This is the most realistic version I've seen on here and very close to mine. Check it out!
You gave them quite a bit more on the salary front for the big 3 and Doughty and I see why you did it but check mine out and let me know what you think. The one big change I made was to put Kapanen on the 1st line with Matthews because he brings much more speed and skill than Brown. I then had Brown on the 2nd with Nylander and Johnsson to help balance the lines a little more.

Hey, Checked your out and that looks like a scary line up too. We would be cup contenders with that line up for a while. I used 82 million cap because they are projecting it to be between 80-82 this year so I think 82 is realistic. and yeah Kapenen did show chemistry with Matthews when he played with him. Switching them around might work and solve Goulets point too.

If Nylander does move into the middle permanently, I see Kapanen on his wing because apparently they're pretty good friends off the ice and have been for awhile.

If they were to get a dman like Doughty and had to spend less up front I could see Hyman - Kadri - Brown as the 3rd line in the shutdown role.

The really issue is in 2020/21. There are just one large salary leaving 6.25m Marleau. And there lots of players, especially if they are good wanting raises coming off their ELCs....Dermot, Liljegren, Bracco, Brooks, Grundstrom, or off their RFAs like Johnson,.

Even if the salary cap stays at 82 mill, they should have just over 14 million to spend on those RFAs, at least according to my scenario I made. Should be very achievable in my opinion. As long as they can sign the big 3 for those reasonable contracts and get Doughty for around 9 mill, it's realistic and damn would they be scary.

Again you want you played too be good. You said about 14m for those 6 players. Let's say Dermot and Liljegeren are somewhat stars....and get 4 m each, that kinda eats away at the cap. Admitting you can always trade good players if your cap doesn't fit.

They would obviously have to make some trades because you can never keep all your players. Look at what Chicago and Pittsburgh have had to do to stay under the cap in the last decade +
That's the sacrifice you have to make to win multiple Stanley Cups and I'll happily make those sacrifices lol
