Depth at Center

Created by: Eli
Team: 2018-19 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 26, 2018
Published: Mar. 26, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
To compete with the Pens, and to maintain enough depth to ice three scoring lines in the event of an injury. This might be an overcorrection, but I think adding two guys at the NHL level who can step into a 2nd line center role, and two more guys in the AHL gives the Caps enough depth to stay competitive as the salary cap rises and other teams race to have the most offensive skill guys. Obviously I'm trading from the positions where the caps are deepest: goaltending and left defense, to help them in the position where they get beat: center. And yes, Orpik and Brouwer are expensive, and it's questionable to take back more total money in that trade, but it opens up cap space immediately, and Bennett's pretty decent. This team might win a lot of games 7 to 6, but I think it would win a lot of games.

one of the best guys in his draft year. And Ottawa certainly wants to get a lot for him if they can't keep him around.

All time record holder for wins in a season, plus a recent first round pick who's going to be a pretty good goal scorer, one of these seasons.

Additional Details:
Brouwer is 9M over two years for a checking winger who used to score goals. Bennett or Gawdin each have about a 3rd of a chance to one day be a top six center. Maybe less? But still a better chance than anyone currently in the Caps' system, so the Caps are interested, even if it means welcoming Brouwer home for a very expensive victory lap.

I wouldn't as a caps fan, JV is a key piece for us in the future and a 30 year old for him is kind of going backwards for us, we want younger guys.

He was joking. He was trying to equate the Connolly for Kyrou trade on the Blues side

And Kyrou is not a big part of the above build. I just get tired of blues fans trading him for Holtby and Backstrom. He's a very good prospect. But he's not the next Lindros.

I guess we’ll agree to disagree, but I don’t think Casting Couch Guy was a Blues fan.

They could call them Kovy and Sammy, if I hadn't traded for Bennett. Confused

I think Backstrom retires as a Capital, after bringing the Cup to Washington. I guess other Caps fans are free to disagree. I definitely see Kyrou (or Klim) as a wonderful additions for the Caps' system if they were remotely available, but even Lindros didn't get that kind of a return. I mean, a middle six center, a backup goalie, a later first round pick from the same year (who turned out to be the best player in the deal), and some hit or miss prospects. For Lindros. Who was more hyped than Crosby. I could see the Caps offering Burakovsky, Connolly, or Grubauer to add some team's top center prospect and trim a bit of cap hit. CCG seemed pretty sure Kyrou was the Blues' top center prospect, but he plays in juniors, and Klim is in the AHL, doing okay, and listed in some places as able to play center, so...? Whatever. After trading Stastny, I'm guessing the Blues would rather go into camp with a glut of center prospects, themselves, and then reevaluate in October.

I agree with you on the Blues holding on to their prospects. I don’t think they want to trade any of them. I mean... Hoffman would have been a Blue if Armstrong coughed up Tage Thompson and a first round pick. That being said, the Blues still need a 1c and they’re going to do absolutely everything they can to get Tavares. If Tavares fails, (which it likely will) Armstrong will probably look for a trade. If the Caps get eliminated early again, I can totally see a Backstrom trade being a fit for both teams. I know you don’t want to trade an elite 1c for someone with no NHL experience, but Robert Thomas is an outstanding prospect. If the Blues give the Caps Thomas, Fabbri, a first rounder and maybe a cap dump than I think both teams win. The only way I’m including a prospect like Thomas in a trade is if there is a 1c coming back. That was my issue with Habs fans who wanted Pacioretty to the Blues for Thomas. Right now, Thomas is our best shot at getting a true 1c so even though Pacioretty is great, Thomas just can’t be traded. You’re right though, I think if the Caps trade Backstrom than they need to trade Ovi as well and completely start over.

Yeah. I think I agree with CCG's assessment that Kyrou is a bigger target for Washington than Thomas, so don't panic about Thomas going anywhere. The Caps are trying to get out of a rut of postseason failure, so they put more weight on tournament performance, and Kyrou came up big at World Juniors. The Caps have Backstrom so they don't need to shop for a future #1C. They have Ovechkin for three more years, after which I think he's hinted he might head to the KHL? So the Caps' goal is probably to win right away, and they need a bottom six that can provide an answer to Brassard, Hagelin, and Kessell, if they want to make it out of the East. So, while they should certainly take a look at the overall strengths and weaknesses of any player, I think they're quite interested in adding guys like Kyrou (and keeping guys like Vrana) who only show up in the playoffs.
