Pretty sure that John Carlson will command $8 million on the open market, No way do i see him signing for less to stay in Washington.
Completely agree. He might sign for the same total of 56M over 8 years instead of 7, but I think that's as big of a hometown discount as MacLellan realistically should be asking. Or, better yet, since he just led all defensemen in scoring, and the Caps' power play is pretty good with him, maybe he should be offering 7.5x8 to get Carlson to skip the open market. I mean, maybe he's told him that it all comes down to how many rounds they win in the playoffs? I don't know. That's the only good reason I can imagine why this deal hasn't been announced yet.
This build trades Bowey without making a realistic offer to keep Carlson or add another right handed defenseman. Since the Caps like to match handedness with side on the penalty kill, and have a right shot on the right point of the power play to set Ovechkin up for one timers.... it's not quite done.

I see what you're doing with Orpik and Connolly. But the Sens are a budget Team and cant offer to take on bad contracts. You might have to go through ARZ or Carolina
Arizona has an artificial cap their owner imposes. Ottawa's owner just gripes about money. Orpik and Connolly could get Ottawa to the playoffs. Might have to retain a bit of salary to get Orpik there, but since Ottawa already traded next year's first round pick... they don't have any interest in missing the playoffs next year, and might just want to add some veteran help. They can probably get it cheaper in free agency, but Connolly has backto back15 goal seasons and Orpik played a fair amount with Carlson this year, and Carlson did okay, so maybe just maybe he can help Karlsson have a Norris year next year, get the team to the playoffs, and sell some more tickets?
