I just got hired... Trades with Leafs, Kings, Habs, and Oilers

Created by: MNBassman
Team: 2018-19 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 24, 2018
Published: Apr. 24, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Thank you, Mr. Liepold for hiring someone who will actually stand up to you and convince you this team cannot simply be tweaked, but needs to take a couple steps backward in order to take giant leaps forward in the near future. Here's my plan...
P.S.I left all newly acquired players on the roster so these deals can be analyzed better. I realize some of them won't be in the NHL next year. Also, players are in positions/roles I see them playing in the future, not next year.

Trades
1.
MIN
  1. Grundström, Carl
  2. Kapanen, Kasperi
  3. Liljegren, Timothy
Additional Details:
Leafs get two veteran players: a legit top-pairing defenseman and a ready-made scoring winger to add to their young core of players. This trade will help the leafs win now, and for the next several years.
TOR
  1. Spurgeon, Jared
  2. Zucker, Jason
Additional Details:
Wild get younger in order to reload for the near future. As always, I am very curious about value opinions.
2.
MIN
  1. Vilardi, Gabriel
Additional Details:
Total shot in the dark here.
LAK
  1. Staal, Eric
Additional Details:
bottom line, I would move Staal for prosect/s or pick/s. He's been unbelievable, but the return for his services would be too good to pass up this summer!
3.
MIN
  1. Juulsen, Noah
  2. 2019 2nd round pick (MTL)
4.
MIN
RFA rights to Darnell Nurse (sign and trade)
    EDM
    1. Brodin, Jonas
    2. 2020 3rd round pick (MIN)

not sure MTL wants to move another young D, especially after seeing how Sergachev did with tampa after letting him go. I could be wrong because somebody like Coyle is what MTL needs but im not convinced the will move Juulsen. I like the other trads though. Vilardi might be good but he needs work.

I don’t think Juulsen needs to b part of the return for the role this guy has him in. Maybe they could go for someone or something else.

Brodin’s really good defensively and they need more defensive players. Nurse is bigger and more physical, but this is a smaller and faster league

Big gamble on those trades. If 2 of them don't work you'll be fired right quick. unsure You better have some job for me on the Wild staff somewhere. cheers

So are you saying that nurse has slow boots?.. Bc he can skate, hit, fight. He's getting better every year comes!... He starts the 3 on 3 ot with mcdavid and Draisaitl. Only reason why nurse isn't better defensively is bc he hasn't played as many games. This boy is going to be a stud.

I wasn't sure about the Brodin/Nurse deal...but do consider it an even swap. It all comes down to team needs/what future roles they see in these two...

Only reason Leafs say no to that trade is it doesn't take into consideration the Leafs cap structure at all. Those 3 players will be good cheap depth options right when the Leafs need it and the Leafs can't afford Spugeron/Zucker with the Matthews and Marner contracts on the horizon

I knew this was a potential obstacle...but was hoping if they knew what Spurgeon's and Zucker's cap hits were going to be they could figure out a budget to sign Matthews, et al. I was also figuring them as a team close to being a Cup contender and maybe they would want some young-ish veteran players to bolster their lineup.

I don't know if the Leafs could afford the cap hit of both Zucker and Spurgeon since little money is going back to the Wild. But the Leafs would interested in Spurgeon for sure. But even at that Spurgeon only has two years left till he's a UFA. Do the Leafs really want to trade the years of Liljgren (potentially) for two year rental? A dilemma for all teams that think they may be contenders. Kapanen is Leafs but the other two I would say are the Leafs two best prospects and are playing with the Marlies now.
Zucker could be traded elsewhere quite easily I presume for a team that needs wingers....like the Kings.
