As a Minnesota fan, I personally don't like this trade mainly because it means losing our only 2 Right Wingers. Although, I wouldn't mind having Bennett as a future First Line Center, it just means that the team would have to make a lot more moves in order to make up for losing Coyle and Nino. If I were the GM, I would let you have one or the other. No way I let you take both for Bennett, some rookie, and a Dman we don't even need.

Fair enough, obviously I am doing this from the Flames perspective and I don't have enough of a knowledge on the Wild depth to know how this would work for them. I think the alternative with what you've said would be something like taking Coyle out and adding Ennis then taking away from the Flames side of the deal.

Wild Fans would gladly give up Ennis.
Same goes for me, I don't know much about the Flames organization but wouldn't you want to keep Bennett as a solid 2nd Liner or is he not panning out as well as most thought he would?

Keeping Bennett would be great, but I think that he is a solid trade piece for a top line RW, our LW is fairly deep and he would always be stuck behind Johnny and Tkachuk, he didn't work great as a center in our system and I think he would be over paid for a 4th line C behind Jankowski, Backlund and Monahan. Ennis would be a piece that CGY would take to maybe decrease the trade value on Nino, especially cause he only has one year left he can sit in the press box and then go. I think there is potential here for a trade, but it would definitely have to be re worked!

As a Caps fan I would love to see Orpik for Brouwer. And by retaining 1.75, you got Brouwer's cap hit next year down to the same as buying Orpik out and signing a September UFA at 750k. Yes, it keeps going for three years, adn some Caps fans might object to that, but Brouwer is still a solid checking line forward, and I'd bet more Caps fans still want to cheer for him than can explain how cap space even works. A third round pick is yours. And 3.25M of cap space in the fall of '19. That's cool. The Caps just need enough cap space to keep Carlson, and this looks mutually beneficial. You could probably get a 6th pick or a bottom pairing AHL defenseman if you retained another quarter of a million, to get Brouwer's cap hit in Washington next year down below the total of buying out Orpik and signing someone at minimum wage, but why split hairs?

Caps pass. We know how bad Brouwer is. We have kids that are younger and better. I'll deal with Orpik for 1 more year. Plus we need to keep our picks.

True and true. But Brouwer fills Chiasson's exact role with more hits and points. Letting Chiasson walk might hurt a bit sentimentally, but the resulting Caps roster has 750k more to chase Carlson or Green than if they just bought out Orpik.

Okay... I see where that isn't worth a 3rd, once they take on two more years of Brouwer at 2.5M.

What if there's no draft pick involved? I mostly just want to see the Brouwer Rangers make a comeback.

Edit: Oh. Wait. I'm getting too enthusiastic about the math. Yeah. You're right, ClockReads. The Caps need a bit more salary retained to take on three years of Brouwer. Awwww.

Edited again: CGY fans? Any chance of Brouwer at 50% for Orpik? Because that definitely creates more immediate cap space for Washington than just buying out Orpik, and might be something Washington could throw in a pick for. And you're not really losing Brouwer, because you can sign Chiasson back, and get basically the same player.

Wild pass.
- The best piece coming from CGY is a LD that isn't needed.
- Bennett might someday become as good as Coyle or Nino, currently he's not close to either of them (when healthy).
- A midget wing (5'7", 140 lbs), put up big numbers in the WHL, but is a long shot to be a NHL player.
- a 2nd that is 3 drafts away

Coyle for Bennett could work as a base trade. I just don't see CGY having anything (they should part with, and the Wild need) to get Nino.
