Letting Carlson walk, Signing a familiar replacement, Grubi trade

Created by: Oggsford_Blues
Team: 2018-19 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: May 5, 2018
Published: May 5, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
A tremendous amount of Carlson's value to this team comes from his ability to play the top man in the power play umbrella and set up OV one timers. If the Caps feel they can't afford to shell out for a 7m/8yr deal or something similar, then Green should fill that PP1 role admirably. Greenie's defensive warts are honestly not much worse than Carlson's so I think this could be a sneaky way to save a lot of money and flexibility without sacrificing much in on ice performance.

Caps need to trade a tendy now that Samsonov is coming over - and the Canes would greatly benefit by bringing in Grub to start ~50 games over Darling. Caps don't have many RW guys in the pipeline, and Gauthier reminds me a lot of a young Wilson with his potential, though it seems he rarely fought, if ever, in Junior. Can step into Connolly's role next season.

Okay I had the same idea about letting Grubauer go. But Mike Green for 4 million a little too much. 3.25 at tops. Tom Wilson that is perfect for a guy like him. But your over the cap as well so you have to leave someone like Riley Barber off the squad. I would have resigned Carlson, but again on your part good on seeing that he is way to much money for what he is worth.

I don't necessarily want the Caps to go in this direction, but made the AGM team just to see how it would look. I forgot to increase the cap from the 17-18 number so in fact there would be about 2.5m in space.

Never good to use a Chiarelli deal as a comp, but I thought of the Kris Russell 4x4 contract and figured Green is much better than him so signing the same deal would be good value. Agree that if WSH signs Green it should probably be for less than this, maybe 3.5m/3yr?

edit: Cap likely to rise from 75m to 78m

@Banks @Jarvis Wish I could delete this comment from my own thread haha. I accidentally made this new comment instead of editing my earlier one. Any chance that will be an option on the site in the future?

Overall, I like the ideas. A few tweaks.

Re-sign Kempny. 2 years, $1.5mm. Well worth it. Guy has been great on the back-end.
In turn, sending Johansen down to Hershey to get more seasoning and take on a top line role there to begin the season would be beneficial.
Cut a year or two off of Mike Green's term. 3 years $4mm sounds about right to me.
Think we can get more out of Carolina for Grubauer. Especially since it's within the division.

Good, simple moves. Keeps a good team together, and growing, with minimal change. The Hockey News predicted Green at another 3x6 as of last summer, and I agree it seems high, but if the cap hits 80 they're probably right that he will get that. That was before he made another all star appearance, but also before neck surgery, which might make trading term for a lower cap hit more questionable? I like the above deal if he's okay with it.

Pinho is waiver exempt and new. Barber will be on a new contract, has been playing in the Caps system a couple years, learning the same system, and would get claimed on waivers.

Agree with comment on Kempny, Johansen. Kempny is a much better fit in the press box than a developing, recent first round pick. Of course, so is Orpik, but only once it's been proven that Djoos can play 20 minutes a game, or they acquire someone else who can. Definitely should keep one of Kempny/Jerabek cheaply to fill in. Maybe even both, if they don't want raises.

Fair assessment. I figured that perhaps Johansen would crack the roster next year and eventually work his way to supplanting Orpik. Probably better to give him top minutes in Hershey and then have him debut in 19-20 when he can have a consistent spot in the lineup. Have edited to reflect Kempny signing and Johansen demotion. The non Orlov/Niskanen pairings would be interesting...I imagine Kempny and Green/Carlson would be a pair, but is Reirden ballsy enough to play Djoos and Bowey together?

I believe that the best way to go is giving up Grubauer, maybe Carlson because he has dropped off the past few years. Maybe try and package a Burakovski, Eller, or Oshie, and Eller or something like that to find a replacement for Carlson. And get some type of draft pick out of it. You could probably get a package with one of the forwards and Grubauer. The most amount of value back is trading Grubauer to a team that needs a Goalie. Arizona, Buffalo, Carolina, or Islanders. Because Greiss isn't getting any younger and Johnny T will only last for so long. Islanders would pay good value for a guy like Grubauer. Especially with his .923 PCT and a 2.35 GAA. Greiss has a 3 GAA and .892 PCT and Halak on his contract year has 3 GAA and a .908 PCT. Halak is making 4.5 mil this year. Greiss has 2 more years and is making 3.5 mil. It would be a better player for Islanders to have a Grubauer.

You can't replace Carlson. Subban isn't going anywhere, and definitely not for Eller.

Nice edit on the Isles. Their fans on here have pretty well banded together to decree Grubauer's value at a 2nd round pick, but a future one, neither of the good ones they have this year. smile

Carolina also needs a goalie, but has so few fans on here and no irl gm, so it's impossible to get a read on what they'd offer. He's worth a mid 1st, but Car moved up too high in the lottery. Maybe two seconds, or a second and a 2rhd? I think Bowey will develop some offense, so Pesce's complete lack of offense is a better fit than Faulk's total lack of defense, but each is worth Grubauer straight up. If Samsonov spends a whole year in Hershey, which of the three would you rather have?

Buf and Ari aren't the right fit.

OB, totally agree with you that Reirden isn't playing Djoos with Bowey. In fact, he's probably keeping Nisk and Orlov on the ice for the first half of each game to get a lead, then subbing in Orpik and Green, to hold it and build on it. Just two thirty minute shifts. NBA style. The strange thing is that, because he's Reirden, it will work.

But I'm not talking about Subban. I'm talking about Erik Karlsson. Erik Karlsson has already said he wants to leave. Hime or pick T.J. Brodie in free agency.

Caps don't have cap space for Ryan's pension.

Brodie has two more years.

And neither replaces Carlson.

Okay Ryan McDonagh's contract is up after the season. I am sure that Lightning won't have the money to sign McDonagh

In 2019. Meanwhile...

So, to be constructive, my best advice is to say, "welcome to the conversation. Good ideas. Try building your own team with them." When you try to sign a right handed UFA defenseman with half as many points as Carlson, you might be a little surprised at how few are available. But that might lead you to work out some other interesting solutions. Good luck.
