Le Grand Rebuild -- Post July 1

Team: 2018-19 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: May 9, 2018
Published: May 9, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
NOTE: Before looking at these trades and losing your ****, please look at Part 1, as there were other moving pieces such as draft picks and rights.

Part of a 2-3 year rebuild, though the lion's share was put in place at the draft. It's just a matter of letting the garden grow.

Habs would have Vilardi, Anderson-Dolan and Poehling on the horizon, plus whomever they draft in 2018. The D is stabilized with Carlson taking some of the load from Weber, Mete maturing and Moore coming in to take big minutes away from Alzner.

Four key trades: Kings get the #3 pick overall (Zadina or Svechnikov) and Galchenyuk for Vilardi, Anderson-Dolan and the #20-something in the draft. Kings would be better positioned to compete this year and next while they still have Kopitar, Carter and Doughty....

Isles add sniper (Max) and solid top-4 RHD (Petry), both discounted, to help with their re-signing of Tavares. Habs get two mid- first and rights to Nelson.

Calgary gets Byron back and a depth Dman and pick for Bennett, who seems dispirited and coming up on a contract year. Perhaps Bennett, closer to home (Kingston) would find new traction in his career.

I like your moves and all values are good expect the Flames trade. Bennett still shows too much promise and still just 21 years old. I think the Flames will be asking for much more.

LD Still looks weak, even with Mete. The offensive lineup looks more robust, we're not throwing around players to see what sticks. With a healthy team and Price back in shape, this is a playoff team.

I agree. I like Bennett, but no one in Calgary seems to. Truth is Byron has delivered every year and fits right into Calgary shock-and-awe style. But I am open to balancing. What would you suggest? Hudon? Rychel (imagine him on a fourth line with Lazar ... yikes). A pick or two?

Maybe, but Mete needs to play, so he will be in the top-4 when the team is 5-on-5. Moore and Weber will be awesome together. Alzner on the PK would be solid and would help mentor Juulsen. If there's a chance to pick up reinforcements via waivers or at the deadline, there's cap room to do so.

Unless you're planning to send Mete down, this looks pretty good to me. If you are sending Mete down, then maybe see about Jack Johnson.

Looking at the Flames roster and going on what I heard some analysts say, a scoring RW, The Flames maybe willing to part with Bennett and Brodie for that elusive top notch RW to play with Gaudreau and Monahan. The Flames have some real good defense prospects that would make this possible.

I think you might be on an island on that one. Pacioretty is a bonafide elite scorer and Petry, while imperfect, is a huge step up on any RD the Isles have. Add to that he's only costing $3.5M against the cap and he's locked in for 3 years, he's a huge bargain.

Lol, I meant it's bad for us. Nelson is nothing special.

Ooos. Sorry, misread. I thought -- essentially -- Nelson for Petry and 2 picks for Max. That was my math.

I wouldn't touch anywhere near Nelson if the cost was Petry. Sure, in your plan we're acquiring Carlson (to a vast overpayment that we're going to regret) which makes Petry expendable but I wouldn't give up more than a low 2nd rounder for Nelson and I also wouldn't sign him to any more than $3M AAV.

Thanks. I'll admit to not having seen enough of Nelson to make that tough a read. I have only seen him as a big, scrappy winger who, I'm told, plays centre. I was slotting him there while we wait for Vilardi, Veleno (assumed we'd draft him), Poehling and Anderson-Dolan to grow up. I am also not a fan of Petry (I don't dislike him, just find his play disinterested and indifferent) so this is not the first time I've undervalued him, though I suspect I was also thinking it's a stretch for Max to be worth two picks in the top half of the draft.

And, yes, I agree 100% with regard to Carlson that it's too much. I expect the real number will be closer to $7x5 or 6, but I was simply signalling that he's the big piece in all this. With him, Weber still gets quality minutes but isn't an exhausted horse by the time the playoffs roll around.
