Desperate Times Call for Desperate Measures

Team: 2018-19 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: May 25, 2018
Published: May 25, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
An all out attack on divisional rival Detroit. Detroit has $17M to sign 8 players.
Habs offer Larkin $7M for 5 years;
Habs offer Mantha $4M for 4-5 years;

I can't imagine Detroit letting Larkin go, which means one or both of Mantha and Athanasiou (maybe both) would almost surely have to be surrendered for a second-round pick. If they match both, they won't have money for Athanasiou.

Assuming the Larkin offer is matched, Habs then could offer Nurse a qualifying offer that Edmonton would be hard-pressed to match.

Calgary, which also has huge salary cap problems, gives Hamilton for the #3 overall.

Max and Petry, both discounted, to the Isles to help them re-sign Tavares.

Recycled the Coyle trade idea.

      All of the draft picks required as compensation must be the club's own draft picks and must available in the nearest entry draft.

      You'd only be able to sign Larkin at $6mil/5yrs and one of Mantha or AA to a max of $4mil/5yrs. Compensation for Larkin would be a 1st wnd 3rd. Compensation for Mantha or AA would be a 2nd.

      Lower AAV and more years is also an option, but doubtful they would sign it.

      I can't see them letting any two of them go, so I felt good about the AA bid. Maybe we just need to urge another GM to put the heat on with an offer sheet for AA. In that case, I'd go higher on Larkin making it harder for them to match.

      Can you give me a clear explination as to how the hell we're getting Mantha and Athanasiou for 2 2nds? Aren't they both RFA? I like the Calgary trade, not bad in terms of value. How did we pick up Darnell Nurse as well?

      Calgary traded a first and 2 seconds for Hamilton. Do you really think they will trade Hamilton and Bennett for a player they let go and the pick, even if it is 3rd overall?

      Actually, I do. You look at their cap situation and what they've got in terms of young Dmen, Hamilton is the one who has trade value. A #3 overall is a pretty good take. Bennett is fast approaching washout status and won't necessarily get a qualifying offer if he has another bad year. Getting Byron replaces the points at half the price.

      Sorry, good catch. Assuming Detroit doesn't allow Larkin to leave, I'd make the RFA offer sheet to Edmonton, which will also struggle to make the cap work.
