Hamilton to ARI + TOR + WSH

Created by: Tkachinla
Team: 2018-19 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 5, 2018
Published: Jun. 5, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Flames use #5 pick in 2018 to select F Brady Tkachuk.

Tkachuk changes his mind about staying and playing it out his career in the NCAA and makes the Flames 3rd line out of camp.

--------------------------------

Calgary adds improved goaltending depth with Bernier signing. If Bernier isn't available, Cam Ward would be a solid short-term option at a lower cap hit. Carter Hutton would also be worth a long look if STL didn't bring him back.

doesn't seem to be arizona's way of doing business, taking on all that cap, especially brouwer's for no reason, even lazar is easily replaced, so do the near bottom arizona want to give up a prospect for a few years of Hamilton

3 years of a 24 year old right shot dman at $5.75M...? This is the best asset by a mile in the deal.

Brouwer at $3.0M for 2 years is readily tradeable. ARI could retain $0.5M and likely get back a 3rd round pick from a team like VAN. Plus, Hjarlmarsson contract heads back to CGY here. In the end, ARI could wind up only having an extra $1.5-2M on the books after these deals. And they get Hamilton.

I believe that Chayka would be very interested in this deal to strengthen the blue line for years to come. I think that the OEL extension talk at $8.25M is all you need to know about how valuable Hamilton is on his current deal. And, I wouldn't be surprised if Chayka did a sign-and-trade with OEL, whereby the contract at $8.25M is used to over-inflate OEL's perceived value around the league. That's dang near Subban money. For a much lesser player.

Quite a few good reasons for ARI to be interested in a deal like this where they get the best player.

I hate everything about the Wilson for Ferland and Fox deal. Giving up way too much for a guy who up to this point in his career has 35 goals in 391 games, and even this year playing with Ovechkin and Kuznetsov, only managed 14. I'd much rather have Ferland at half the money, let alone giving away Fox too.

Only the first trade is remotely possible, IF we got the right guy in the draft. Overall, not too positive.

I'd personally rather keep Wilson than make that trade, so I guess it doesn't work for both parties.

Fine. I think Wilson brings a different level than Ferland in the playoffs, and can do it consistently. We've only really see Ferland do it once, when he single-handedly took over the Vancouver first round a couple years back.

Hamilton deal was based on an ARI post I saw earlier that was poorly valued. Got me to thinking what CGY could be happy to take. Getting Tkachuk and more picks and still keeping a very, very strong Top 4 back end? I'd argue Gio/Brodie + Hjal/Hamonic is stronger than last year by a good margin.

Plus, replacing Ferland/Bennett/Brouwer with Wilson/Brown/Tkachuk is a significant upgrade. WSH would think long and very hard about the Wilson deal because of Fox. That value goes up in their minds if Carlson walks as a UFA.

Would you suggest then that getting Tkachuk and having both on one team for the ultra-long-term would be "getting the wrong guy" in the draft? Would be hard to argue that case I think.
