Caps trade

Created by: Eli
Team: 2018-19 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 6, 2018
Published: Jun. 6, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think if Barzal keeps improving at all, this is a playoff team, with some good leadership. But of course there's still 11M of cap space to play with, and I haven't even looked at RFAs. Just focusing on a trade, wondering if it can help each team avoid losing a great player to free agency.

Trades
NYI
  1. Orpik, Brooks
Additional Details:
Carlson, John (signed for eight years)
Grubauer, Philipp (RFA)

Before you point out that Orpik is 37, check out his playoff stats: 1st in the league in plus/minus, leading all defensemen in hits, third among D in blocks, multiple point game to eliminate Columbus, GWG game 2 of the SCF, and Holtby's save percentage goes up to .955 when Orpik is on the ice. Straight magic.
WSH
  1. Tavares, John
Additional Details:
Pulock, Ryan (RFA)
Tavares is already signed for eight years, because in the current CBA, only the team that had a guy before can sign him for eight years, and neither of these Johns has worked out a deal yet.

I respect the balls it takes to propose a trade like this. Props to you. I would counter that you could get more for JT since he is so elite and signed for 8 years. Although bringing in Carlson and Grubauer (I would want Samsonov more but whatever) looks great for the NYI roster, why would WSH want to get JT with Kuznetsov and Backstrom being their top centers. I don't think WSH wants to put either guy on the wing to make room for JT.
I like the idea of signing and trading JT but don't think WSH would be the best fit despite their ability to give you Carlson and a promising goalie

I don't see either team trading a top player within the division.

Also, I can't see both players agreeing to sign and trades this close to free agency.

Yeah. The Caps don't need Tavares, but I don't think either team wants to end up with nothing. If you think I'm thinking too much about what the Isles need in order to win some hockey games, and not enough about what's in it for the team I've rooted for, for the last few decades?

I'll take it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Gi4tOrKphw

Thanks. Yeah. I guess there's a tradition of testing the market. But this might be the first time we've had two UFAs good enough to where the 8yrs with old club/7yrs with any other club rule actually makes a difference in how much they'd earn, and other teams are probably not that interested in making a sign and trade right before the players go to free agency, so there's a mutual opportunity for Washington and NYI to each get one of the biggest fish to tempt free agency since Stevens and Shanahan.
