If we're putting player values in terms of draft pick equivalents, I'd go with:
Beaulieu: only a 3rd right now to the Caps due to bad season, esp. +/-, but maybe worth a 2nd somewhere due to good offense with MTL. Caps are stacked at left defense, though. Orlov is fantastic. Johansen is going to be awesome. Djoos is going to be awesome. Kempny is awesome. Jerabek is okay....
Girgensons: a late 2nd due to high potential, but the Caps don't desperately need offense.
Larsson: about a 3rd... good faceoffs, but not a great shutdown center yet. Potential is there. Caps should be interested if they can't afford Beagle, and shouldn't mind overpaying.
Scandella: late 1st, easily. Good shutdown guy, even on a bad season. Similarly negative plus/minus as Beaulieu, but through way, way more minutes. Could replace Orpik's defense if he leaves.
Connolly--Late 1st, because he got a lot of goals in the playoffs and assisted on the Cup-winning goal just this week. Only one year left, but at such a low cap hit, there will be plenty of demand.
Djoos--about a mid-2nd. he's doing about as well as you'd expect a good 2nd round pick defenseman to do in their rookie season. Was a real steal in the 7th round. Coming along fine.
Gersich--about a mid-2nd. Fast. Skilled. Waiver-exempt, so he gives the Caps depth even if they add a few UFAs. Could certainly trade him if some team needs him, but not for guys who aren't waiver exempt and aren't much younger or better in terms of what they've shown so far.
Orpik--about a 3rd. Led defensemen in hits, plus/minus, and SCF GWG. Two points in the game to eliminate Columbus. Two points in the finals. Played most of the last five minutes of game five to help the Caps hold onto a one goal lead when Vegas pulled their goalie. I'd give him playoff MVP this year, but he's ancient, so who knows what the future holds. Maybe 4.5M next year is a high salary for what he has left. On the other hand, trading Chelios at 37 makes lists of the worst trades in Chicago's hockey history. So I don't think the Caps are paying draft picks to unload Orpik's cap hit, if that's what this post is about. But I do think he could be available cheap because, as the title notes, Cup winners can run out of cap space pretty quickly, and it might make more sense, long-term, for Washington to sign younger guys long-term. DSP is 25. Maybe a 12M over 8 years keeps him around? Kempny is 27. I could certainly see the Caps trading Orpik to open up cap space. But at this price, it won't be to Buffalo.
