Tavares, Tanev, & Picks - Setting Up 2018/19 and Beyond

Created by: EvanM
Team: 2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 12, 2018
Published: Jun. 12, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Tanev Trade - Toronto acquires reliable top 4 right shot defenceman who has played with #44 in the past and has had success. The price for Tavev is reasonable as his injury history poses a risk. Vancouver acquires NHL ready depth in all positions. The Canucks get younger and deeper with the trade, the Leafs get a player that fills a void in their lineup.

Martin Trade - Leafs acquires an earlier pick in the 3rd round and additional pick in the 4th at this years draft. Anaheim acquires Martin and another 3rd rounder.

1st Round Pick Trade - Toronto acquires #28 overall and #48 overall for #25 overall. Leafs regain a 2nd round pick in this years draft.

Tavares Signing: 10.5 million for 8 years - Leafs offer 10.5 as Matthews will be the teams highest paid player at 11 million starting 2019/20 season.

Brodziak Signing: 1.2 million for 2 years - adds experience, penalty killing abilities, and another centreman to the bottom 6. Put up 33 points last season.

Johnsson Signing: 2.25 million for 5 years: Same aav as Hyman, buys up valuable UFA years. May be a margin deal if Johnsson hits his ceiling.

Nylander Signing: 6.8 million over 7 years - Market value for dynamic scoring winger coming off entry level deal. Comparisons are Gaudreau and Pasternak.

6.6 million in cap space for the 2018/19 season. Assuming that Gardiner is not resigned (4 mill) and Dermott moves up the depth chart, Hainsey retires, Marleau retires, and the cap raises 1 million in 2019/20 the Leafs will have 20 millions in cap room to extend Matthews, Marner, and sign a new backup goalie.

2019/20:

Johnsson (2.25) Matthews (11) Marner (8.5)
Hyman (2.25) Tavares (10.5) Nylander (6.8)
Grundstrom (925K) Kadri (4.5) Brown (2.1)
Brodziak (1.2) Aaltonen (925k) Kapanen (2.1)
Lindholm (1)

Reilly (5) Tanev (4.5)
Dermott (865K) Zaitzev (4.5)
Borgman (1) Ozhiganov (1)

Tavares does not go to the Leafs or any Eastern Canadian team or Californian team for that matter. He will not pay those taxes.

The Rangers are trading a lottery pick and a second for the 18th pick?

He still has to pay taxes on those as well! Why not take those same endorsement deals to a team like New Jersey or Columbus or Arizona or someplace without such high taxes and make more money and play for teams that are in similar situations?

The trade is not for the Rangers 9th overall pick, it is for their 28th overall pick.

Well as you should know, hockey players are incorporated and do not all that much of salary on personal income taxes. Gee New York state would be just as high as just about any where if personal tax rates were used.

The Tanev might be fair. I wouldn't use a silly international tournament as measure of success that Reilly and Tanev might have as NHL partners though.

Hockey players salaries are not incorporated and fall under normal tax rules just like every other person. They can create a corporation for any money they make through endorsements though. So I was wrong about the endorsements not being able to make it up, but it would still be smarter to go somewhere else since he loses so much to income taxes in Eastern Canada. Especially when Corporate taxes are different and lower in the States then they are in Canada.

Marleau on a 35+ contract and as such, should he retire Leafs on the hit for full $6.25! Would have to hope that after paying out bonuses in 19/20 with only $1m left that a cap floor team would pick him up but Marleau would have to waive!

Vancouver has Thatcher Demko, Markstrom and Nilsson all under contract for next year. On top of that DiPietro is a highly touted youngster as well. They have no need for Sparks, Lievo would be a top 6 forward on the Canucks though.

Change it to Leivo, Carrak and a conditional pick (2nd or 3rd if Carrack signs with Vancouver, whatever gets the deal done.)

Are you his accountant? If so cook those books and figure it out.

Contract amount and term, team success potential, team role, hometown (could be a positive or negative), type of hockey market (again..could be a positive or negative depending on his personality), quality of life in the city, loyalty to current team...

these are all things he's going to consider, amongst others, probably. Teams in high-tax states/provinces have landed big free agents in the past so a blanket conclusion that they are all out of the running lacks merit.
