If the leafs want to keep the big 3 and sign tavares

Description
please don't start crying in the comments about how the leafs are never gonna get JT, i know its unlikely. I just wanted to show how the leafs would have to run their roster if they wanted to sign JT and keep the big 3. This first season after AM and Marner are signed and have their contracts kick in will be the toughest. After this year, Marleau's cap hit comes off the books and the cap will go up which will free them up to upgrade the defense. Let me know in th comments if the contracts or trades are or aren't realistic. The Kadri trade is completely random, as spurgeon was just the first RD i thought of that is similar value to Kadri

ya matthews is getting more money. And Its not really first and second line center as much as 1A and 1B(see Malkin, Crosby)

True but Tavares is waiting for the cap to jump up to make his deal. Hes pulling a Stamkos 2.0.

What do you mean waiting for it to jump?

The league hasnt stated what the cap is going to be until next week. Tavares is apparently waiting to find out so he doesnt handcuff the isles. If they make a lucrative offer.

Oh ok. Ya i assumed he was gonna wait to see what the cap was because he can't sign until they release it i think, as the cap number will come out before july first. And this is assuming Tavares wants to come to toronto, this isn't really if he wants to come or not. Just a hypothetical where he does want to come

Wild would much rather have Nylander than Kadri. We already have a defensive center in Koivu. I personally think Spurgeon for Nylander straight up is pretty fair, but Leafs fans may not feel the same way.

Again, I wasn't really picking Spurgeon based on extensive research, just someone that came to mind. Could do Kadri for any other top 4 RD that makes sense

It doesn’t work. Cup contenders always end up in cap hell, it’s te teams that work around that for the longest (Hawks, Pens) that win championships. A contending franchise doesn’t want cap hell right away like this would. We would still need a shut down centre with this team

I think he would prefer to go to a team that has better players and better change of winning. People that really don't follow hockey seem to them numbering of players or lines have meaning. Each night four centres play. It's not like in football when generally one quarterback plays. Don't know how playing with the Leafs leading point producing Marner would make Tavares a secondary player.

beanie2911. You're right if Tavares is signed at some time a high priced player will have to be traded for a good asset....either for position or cap reasons. If the trade was made this summer....Leafs get better having Tavares not Kadri and Spurgeon not Carrick. That's pretty good use of assets and cap.

It's a LOT of money at center. Hopefully, if Nylander is the 3C they don't need Riley. Also can see Kapanen taking a shorter deal with a little more $ and then cashing out after the '19-'20 season.
