Max Splash - Summer of Dubas

Description
PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING:

Now that Kyle Dubas is firmly in charge of this franchise. Whether that is a major trade or big signing, I expect something big, something that he can put his stamp on.

While I am not sure they are the front-runner, assuming he is a UFA July 1st, Toronto will be in the hunt. What you will see in the thread is a 1 year max deal at $15 million, but what you also need to know is that the Leafs will concurrently work out an extension with him that will be 7 years at $10 million AAV. It is CBA circumvention, but there is nothing I can find that prohibits a team from signing a player, and then immediately resigning them.

Anyway, that's the plan. To make his contract work long term, and to bolster our defense, I've made some other deals and signings.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. If you are aware of any CBA rules that prohibit a team from doing what I am proposing, definitely let me know.

so you get a better defenseman, a better draft pick, and Van gets a bunch of meh prospects? ill pass
also you might have to add another piece to that vegas trade, maybe just taking out Hague

I like all these ideas except for getting DeHaan. Just another overpaid depth player - see Hainsey...

Tavares isn't signing anywhere for 1 year, hes going to a team that's going to give him 7-8 years.

Getting Tanev, shouldn't be a difficult trade to pull off. There are 2 things that will cause it to not happen.

#1 Vancouver will go nuts and expect a 1st and Nylander which is an immediate hang up from Dubas.
#2 Vancouver has a terrible GM and they decide to trade their 1st pick for ROR in Buffalo and then spend other assets to become a "contender" (Vancouver fans should fear this idea big time)

What the trade should look like is maybe Borgman and 2nd for Tanev, or I'd be okay with this years first or a lottery protected 1st next year, for Tanev. He is not worth more than that and the Leafs have a lot of assets currently, wasting them on "Bold" trades would be unwise. Just look at Montreal and Edmonton and their "bold trades".

You didn't read the preamble at the top of the page. It's a potentially creative way around the CBA that would net Tavares $15M in Year 1, plus a 7-year extension at $10M all signed in the same summer. I'm not sure if that's allowed or not, but it's creative thinking. There may be a rule that says a player can't sign another deal within a certain window of time following the execution of a contract.

---------------------

VGK would need to remove at least one player from that deal for them to do it. Gardiner only has a year left on his contract and in my opinion, is not as good as Colin Miller.

where the hell did you get Nylander, everyone knows Nylander is worth more, a deal at the deadline was Liljegren for tanev and a pick (i think). which would be ideal for both teams. if not tanev is worth a first, GMs will pay heavy prices for top 4 RHD, and Tanev fits in toronto better than anyone on the market right now (except Carlson)

Rumours have linked Nylander to Vancouver several times. (From Vancouver media and fans) As for the deadline trade of Liljegren and a pick for Tanev, that would have been shot down immediately. Liljegren would be the top defensive prospect if he joined Vancouver, his value is way higher than Tanev's.

Oh you are sending Tanev and a 2nd for Liljegren. Sorry for the confusion, still a no though. At least in my opinion, I'm not really one to trade prospects though. Especially ones as highly touted as Liljegren. Tanev is good and I really hope TO gets him and I wouldn't be sad if it costs them this years 1st rounder, but I would not trade a roster player (Well Leivo if he can't crack TO's lineup) or a Liljegren. Any other prospect though would be available for Tanev.

i think its just gunna be a 1st and a meh prospect or something like that, probably just the 1st. the reason i think the 2nd from vancouver would be good is cause it would be a 32-38th or so, but i did hear at the deadline a deal almost happened with Liljegren, but media is always bullshitting

Media in Ontario said that the Leafs made Liljegren basically untouchable. He was expected to challenge for 1st overall last year until mono derailed his entire season. The Leafs stole him at 17 last year, should have been a top 5 pick. The same thing happened in Rielly's draft year. He hurt his knee and missed most of the season but came back for the playoffs and dominated which didn't hurt him nearly as much as Liljegren.

95%, of Tanev trades are slanted for the Canucks, this sone of the few this slanted for the Leafs. Canucks aren't going to slide down to 25 from 7. Leafs will be carrying over 3m in cap, don't how the signings happen next year.

Wow! I cannot believe my thread blew up so much with comments and feedback. To be clear, and I appreciate several posters reminding other posters of this, the main idea of this thread is to try and circumvent the CBA in a way that would allow the Leafs to use the abundance of cash they have this year, combined with a competitive extension offer working out to a total of 8 years at a total of $85 million dollars. This would lead the charge in term (though they could as high 8 years in the extension since he'd technically be a Leaf already) and be in the upper level of offers at total dollars. The only thing in the CBA I can find about something even remotely close to this is that a team cannot sign a player to an extension until July 1st of the year prior to the contract ending. I am not sure how happy the league would be about this, but it's technically not "illegal".
