The Caps could easily get a first for Grubauer and probably a first and something else for Bowey. Caps won't make those trades.

Grubauer gets you a 1st. Bowey gets you at least a 2nd.

With a minimum of thirty games played, Grubauer had the 5th best GAA in the league (http://www.nhl.com/stats/player?report=goaliesummary&reportType=season&seasonFrom=20172018&seasonTo=20172018&gameType=2&filter=gamesPlayed,gte,30&sort=goalsAgainstAverage)

He was 8th in savepercentage among the same group: http://www.nhl.com/stats/player?report=goaliesummary&reportType=season&seasonFrom=20172018&seasonTo=20172018&gameType=2&filter=gamesPlayed,gte,30&sort=savePctg

Yes, it's the same team that Holtby plays with, but Holtby wasn't in the top 30 in either stat in the regular season. He took about a month off, healed up whatever wasn't working, and hit the playoffs fresh, but Grubauer legit stole the starting job from a Vezina winner. To me that sounds like, in recent history, someone who got traded for a 10th overall pick. Anyone else remember?

I'd probably try to trade him and Djoos as big parts of a deal for Zadorov, Zaitsev, or Ristolainen. But if a team wants to trade a high pick for a talented young goalie, he's the one available.

i dont see BUF loosing Risto, also i think teams would want to see what he can do as a full time starter first. and look at Scott Darling and how he turned out. very similar numbers but flopped as a starter. different age, but still similar idea

Bowey I'm not convinced has much trade value right now because he got zero power play opportunities as a rookie, got benched at the trade deadline, and so he has low offensive totals and no playoff experience. That's great if they plan to re-sign him, though. Should be under a million, even with some term.

Among right handed defensemen, Carlson and Niskanen were 8th and 14th this year in even strength points (http://www.nhl.com/stats/player?report=skaterpoints&reportType=season&seasonFrom=20172018&seasonTo=20172018&gameType=2&leftyOrRighty=R&position=D&filter=gamesPlayed,gte,1&sort=evPoints) so there isn't a ton of immediate opportunity for Bowey to secure a top power play spot in Washington, but with Kempny and Jerabek likely some of the hotter targets of free agency, I think Bowey gets his regular spot back and does a little more with it in his second year.

His trade value right now is a roll of the dice. Depends if any other GMs were even paying any attention to him. He's very talented. Had back to back sixty point years in junior. Was a great 2nd round pick, quite recently, and is adapting just fine to the NHL. There were 50% more LHD in the NHL last year than RHD, so a few teams might pay a preminum to trade for an RHD, but probably for a more established one. I think if the Caps put Bowey on their 2nd power play unit, and give him 15 or 16 minutes a night instead of 13:45, he'll start to get some points, start to get some more of a feel for the pro game, and start to get some trade value. But then his next contract might be at a Niskanen value, and he isn't ready defensively, to replace Niskanen, so there's no need to rush. he had almost a hit and a block per game. If he can build on those while adding a bit more offense, he'll be just fine.

Yeah. Doesn't always work out. But.... here's a hint: the one I'm thinking of, the pick turned out to be Bo Horvat.

Edit: Darling had played 75 games in three seasons with Chicago, and posted .923, 2.37 with 36 wins when he was traded at 28. Grubauer has posted 101 games over 6 seasons with the Caps, at 26, and posted a .923 and 2.29, with 43 wins. While Darling's dropoff behind Carolina's defense is a reminder that goaltending stats are team stats, and you can't blame one guy if your team gives up way too many scoring chances.... Grubauer is younger, more experienced, and has a better GAA over a longer NHL career including a few games early to get his feet wet, but also including more games over the last three years than Darling had played when he was traded. Sometimes trading for goalies helps teams. Sometimes it doesn't. I'd love to sit down with some spreadsheets and figure out what it is about teams and goalies that works or doesn't work, but at a certain point, it's also just about getting some new people onto a team that's been losing. People who aren't exhausted from losing. Grubauer is coming off a Cup championship where he's always been a supportive teammate while Holtby played in the playoffs. If he fits into the salary structure, obviously he's wecome back, but he's played well enough to earn more than the 2M or so Washington can likely afford to give him, so you look at trades of guys good enough to be starters but without opportunity, and the last five or six have gone for either a first or two seconds. Nobody really trades top ten picks, but one of the 10th overall picks that got traded was for Vancouver's backup goalie, who had kind of stolen the starting job a time or two.
