i dont see BUF loosing Risto, also i think teams would want to see what he can do as a full time starter first. and look at Scott Darling and how he turned out. very similar numbers but flopped as a starter. different age, but still similar idea
Yeah. Doesn't always work out. But.... here's a hint: the one I'm thinking of, the pick turned out to be Bo Horvat.
Edit: Darling had played 75 games in three seasons with Chicago, and posted .923, 2.37 with 36 wins when he was traded at 28. Grubauer has posted 101 games over 6 seasons with the Caps, at 26, and posted a .923 and 2.29, with 43 wins. While Darling's dropoff behind Carolina's defense is a reminder that goaltending stats are team stats, and you can't blame one guy if your team gives up way too many scoring chances.... Grubauer is younger, more experienced, and has a better GAA over a longer NHL career including a few games early to get his feet wet, but also including more games over the last three years than Darling had played when he was traded. Sometimes trading for goalies helps teams. Sometimes it doesn't. I'd love to sit down with some spreadsheets and figure out what it is about teams and goalies that works or doesn't work, but at a certain point, it's also just about getting some new people onto a team that's been losing. People who aren't exhausted from losing. Grubauer is coming off a Cup championship where he's always been a supportive teammate while Holtby played in the playoffs. If he fits into the salary structure, obviously he's wecome back, but he's played well enough to earn more than the 2M or so Washington can likely afford to give him, so you look at trades of guys good enough to be starters but without opportunity, and the last five or six have gone for either a first or two seconds. Nobody really trades top ten picks, but one of the 10th overall picks that got traded was for Vancouver's backup goalie, who had kind of stolen the starting job a time or two.
