I think it works for both teams. CGY gets veteran D to help with stability and can afford his cap while WSH gets low cap, role player for depth in lineup. Felt that this is good for both teams to get something for either player while they still can

Toronto has Reilly, Gardiner and Dermott on the left side of their defence. Trading 2 NHL forwards with upside for a guy that isn't a clear improvement on any of the left side defencemen makes no sense. Reilly is better than Brodie, Dermott is in year 2 of his ELC and Gardiner and Brodie are pretty much the same player.

Most fans from other teams don't realize/recall that Brodie played his best hockey on the right side of the ice. He would instantly be the best dman in TOR on the right side. That said, I get that Babcock prefers his dmen to be playing their "correct side" for system reasons. So yeah, this is a tough trade as set up.

It would work though, for both teams, as: Kapanen + Dermott for Brodie + B-quality forward prospect (Klimchuk, Poirier, etc.)

This trade does not work. There is no rational arguement to make this work either. Hyman is on the Leafs top line and is their number 1 penalty killer. On top of that, he plays with heart and sandpaper, something that the Leafs don't have a lot of. 2ndly Kapanen has a tonne of skill, insane speed and a lot of potential. Toronto isn't going to create 2 new holes in the lineup in a trade that solves no holes in their current lineup. If you are going to propose a trade, it needs to make sense for both teams, not just the team you cheer for.

There is no value here for Toronto. Brodie is not someone Toronto would be interested in. If they sent Hyman and Kapanen the other way, they'd be wanting Hamilton. Which I am sure Calgary fans will scream blood murder about and suggest it should be Matthews, Marner and Nylander for Hamilton.
