and with as bad as the Habs were last season could be another top 5 pick, not worth it at all

Yes they would. However, there is no "possibility" on the website to work out a trade for an RFA player.

I'm thinking a Kessel-type of trade, where he is an RFA but the Canadiens and the Hurricanes work out a trade, and where the Canadiens have already figured out a contract with Lindholm.

Of course that would probably mean that the 1st and 3rd would still go, but at 23 y.o. with 5 seasons under his belt, do you not think it's worth it?

I wouldn’t offer sheet him, just let negotiations fall apart on their own. Both camps are far away from an agreement, let them argue and then scoop him cheap

Canes hold the power still...they qualify him by July 1. He also will want at least 5x$5M. Good luck with that.

There is no scenario where you ‘get him for cheap’

Agreed. Hence the trade scenario. Yes, first-round picks are worth a lot. However, I think it buys Montreal some time before either of Poehling/Ikonen/Kotkaniemi are NHL-ready.

5X5 is expensive, but Montreal is known to overpay.

If they can’t agree on a contract though Carolina will look to trade him, that’s where I think you could trade for him cheap, should have worded it with more detail.
